Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney worried they would be cast as villains when they took charge at Wrexham in early 2021.

From Manchester United and Newcastle United to Arsenal and Derby County, some of the most famous names in English football have been at the centre of acrimony between fans and owners in recent years, fuelling justifiable suspicion among supporters when wealthy investors who appear to have little connection to the local area suddenly become interested in buying clubs.

These takeovers can often end badly, but Wrexham's story has been a more promising one. Welcome to Wrexham is the documentary that tells the tale so far.

Here's when the series will be out, where to watch it and what it's all about.

What is the Welcome to Wrexham documentary?

The documentary follows Reynolds and McElhenney's unlikely move for Wrexham, a non-league club based at a stadium that hosted Wales internationals as long ago as the 1870s and has a capacity of under 11,000.

Wrexham are a modest club with a charming story and a passionate fanbase. Based in Wales, they have never been beyond the second tier of English football.

The Dragons had to be saved from going out of existence in 2011 and have not been in the league since they were relegated from the fourth tier three years earlier.

Reynolds and McElhenney, as the documentary shows, have had a predictably bumpy ride trying to steer a club far removed from the glamour of the Premier League.

Relaying the pitch at Wrexham's ancient Racecourse Ground proved an expensive and complex challenge, and there was a painful end to the 2021/22 season when the team failed in the playoffs after finishing second in the National League table in their quest to regain their league status.

The arrival of celebrity owners has raised Wrexham's profile around the world. Now millions of potential new fans are about to see how it happened.
