The 2022 FIFA World Cup is a brand new experience for fans, with the tournament switched from its usual summer window to November-December in Qatar.

The prospect of a winter World Cup has been met with a mixed supporter reaction, not least in the UK, where the Premier League is on a mid-season break as a result.

Fans have had to arrange their viewing plans to fit in with festive holidays, thanks to kick-off times for matches that have ranged from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the U.K.

Here at The Sporting News, we have all the latest information on how to watch and stream the 2022 World Cup on terrestrial TV.

How to watch World Cup 2022 live for free in the UK

All matches at the 2022 World Cup are being televised for free in the UK on the BBC and ITV.

The tournament has include an even split of games between the two broadcasters, and specific deals were in place for the sharing of England matches and Wales matches.

Group-stage matches were divided between the two channels, with the BBC having first choice over the majority of knockout games.

The final will be shown on both channels.

Half of the World Cup 2022 matches are available to watch live on the BBC, with BBC 1 offering live fixtures and a nightly highlights show rounding up the best of the action from Qatar.

The other half of the matches are available to watch live on ITV, with the action split between ITV 1 and ITV 4. Both will carry live matches and ITV will also carry a nightly highlights show.

In Scotland, ITV matches will be shown on STV. Meanwhile, all Wales games were available on Welsh broadcaster S4C.

How to live stream World Cup for free in the UK

BBC and ITV viewers will be able to live stream games from either channel (or watch later via catch-up) provided viewers have a registered and valid account.

BBC will be offering streaming via the BBC iPlayer and ITV will do likewise via ITVX, which was launched for Qatar 2022 as a replacement streaming service for its existing ITV Hub player.

In Scotland, STV matches will also be available on the STV Player.
