Scotland have the chance to become the first team aside from hosts Germany to qualify for UEFA Euro 2024 on Thursday, but they may need to avoid defeat against the joint-most successful team in the history of the competition in order to reach the finals with two group-stage matches to spare.

Only Die Mannschaft can match Spain's record of three Euros titles, and Luis de la Fuente's players need a point to guarantee they remain in the second qualification place in Group A after the Matchday 7 fixtures.

The visitors will qualify regardless of their result if third-placed Norway, who are two points behind Spain with a game less to play, do not win in Cyprus on the same evening.

Scotland have enjoyed a strong record in qualifying, beating Spain at home as part of a five-game winning run, but this is the biggest test they will face in the group.

The Sporting News looks at the key details ahead of this game, including how to watch it across the world, kickoff times and the latest lineup news.

Spain vs Scotland lineups, team news

Lamine Yamal became the youngest scorer in La Liga history on Sunday but the 16-year-old Barcelona winger has since withdrawn from his national squad after being assessed by Spain's medical team. Club teammate Gavi is also a doubt in midfield.

After Villarreal winger Yeremy Pino was injured last week, De La Fuente called up Ansu Fati — currently on loan at Brighton & Hove Albion from Barca — and Granada's Bryan Zaragoza. Athletic Bilbao attacking midfielder Oihan Sancet joins Zaragoza in hoping for a senior international debut.

Spain projected lineup (4-3-3, right to left): Simon (GK) — Carvajal, Le Normand, Laporte, Balde — Fabian Ruiz, Rodri, Merino — Joselu, Morata, Williams

Newcastle United midfielder Elliot Anderson trained with Scotland last month but is not available for selection while the 20-year-old decides whether to potentially represent England instead.

On-loan Arsenal left-back Kieran Tierney is out with an injury he sustained for Real Sociedad on Saturday. Millwall striker Kevin Nisbet and Rangers midfielder Ryan Jack are also sidelined.

Assistant boss John Carver has called Tierney's absence a "big loss" and hinted that Scotland could move from a back three to four in defence for this game.

Scotland projected lineup (4-3-2-1, right to left): Gunn (GK) — Porteous, Hendry, Cooper, Robertson — Hickey, Gilmour, McGregor — McTominay, McGinn — Adams

Spain vs Scotland prediction, odds

Scotland's perfect run in their opening five games has carried them to almost-certain qualification irrespective of the result here, helped by a goal in each half by Manchester United's Scott McTominay in their splendid 2-0 win in this fixture in March.

It is difficult to look beyond revenge for Spain, whose own hopes would be damaged but remain in their hands if they fail to win. The 2012 champions have lost only five of their 125 home European qualifiers, including a flawless 23-game group-stage record since 2003.

Prediction: Spain 2-0 Scotland
