When does the transfer window open and close?

England

  • Officially, the summer transfer window in England will open on June 10, 2022 and comes to an end on September 1 at 23:00 local time.
  • International transfers will be expected to go through on July 1 (i.e Erling Haaland to Manchester City).
  • EFL clubs can sign players on emergency loans after the deadline.

Spain

  • The summer transfer period in Spain will open on July 1, 2022, ending on September 1 at 22:59.
  • Largely similar to the English window with regards to international transactions.
  • No major European tournament scheduled this summer, signifying that it will be easier to complete transfers than World Cup/EURO competition years.

Germany and Italy

  • In Germany and Italy, their transfer window will commence on July 1, 2022, and concludes on September 1 at 17:00 CEST.
  • This falls in line with the starting point of the Spanish window, which is standard practice for most European leagues.

France

  • Ligue 1 and other French tiers will follow the path of the Premier League, opening its doors for business on June 10, while it will close on September 1 at 23:59.
  • International transactions will more than likely take place in July.

Transfer windows beyond Europe - key leagues in North, South America, and Australia

USA - MLS

  • Primary transfer window has already taken place - running from February 10, 2022 to May 4.
  • Secondary transfer window (mid-season) - July 7, 2022 running until August 4.
  • Major League Soccer follows different guidelines, due to their regular season running over a single year - February 26 to October 9, with the MLS Cup final scheduled on November 5, 2022.

Argentina and Brazil

  • The Brazilian secondary transfer quarter opens on July 18 and ends on August 15, with the 2022 Campeonato Brasileiro Série A taking place between the April 9 and November 13, 2022.
  • In Argentina, their transfer window opens much earlier, going from May 16 to August 7, 2022. This early start is due to their relatively short 2022 campaign, which starts on June 5 and ends on October 23 using a round-robin format.

Australia

  • With the 2021/22 A-League season in its final stages, the transfer window for the new campaign is set to run between July 24 and October 15.

What are the likely biggest transfers of the summer?

In what is set to be a summer that is jam-packed full of action, The Sporting News takes a look at some of the most likely big transfers this summer.

Erling Haaland to Manchester City

As confirmed by the club, Manchester City have agreed in principle to the signing of Borussia Dortmund sensation Erling Haaland, with the transfer set to go through on July 1 subject to agreeing to personal terms.

In 2021/22, the 21-year-old was in fine form, scoring 29 goals in 30 appearances for BVB as they finished as runners-up in the Bundesliga.

Much excitement has surrounded his impending arrival, with many seeing him as the final piece to Pep Guardiola's jigsaw as the Catalan aims to bring the UEFA Champions League trophy to the Etihad Stadium next season.

Kylian Mbappe to Real Madrid

One of the most high-profile transfer sagas in recent memory looks to finally be edging towards a close, although perhaps not the one many expected.

Kylian Mbappe, who was reported to have agreed terms with Real Madrid ahead of a possible free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain, now looks to have accepted the Ligue 1 champions' offer of a new contract.

The 23-year-old was the star man for PSG in Ligue 1 this season, registering 44 goal contributions in 34 appearances; 25 goals and 19 assists.

Antonio Rudiger to Real Madrid

Continuing their shrewd recruitment strategy, the Spanish champions have agreed a deal to sign Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger on a free transfer this summer.

His contract at the Santiago Bernabeu is set to run until 2026, with an official announcement expected at the end of the 2021/22 campaign from Real Madrid.

At 29 years of age, Los Blancos will pick up an elite central defender in the prime of his career who will immediately become a key contributor, following his starring role in aiding Chelsea's top-four finish in 2021/22.

Robert Lewandowski to Barcelona

Bayern Munich man Robert Lewandowski has signalled he will not sign a new contract at the German champions, prompting major interest from Catalan giants Barcelona going into the summer transfer window.

Despite interest from Chelsea and PSG, Lewandowski looks to only have eyes for a transfer to the Camp Nou as he seeks a new challenge after eight years in Bavaria.

With his contract at Bayern Munich due to expire in 2023, there is a real possibility he could swap Munich for Barcelona this summer.
