Premier League teams relegated 2022/23: Which clubs went down to Championship? image

The final day of the 2022/23 Premier League season started with three teams hoping to avoid the final two relegation places.

The group was separated by just two points. Everton held the advantage ahead of their visit from Bournemouth, standing on 33 points. Leicester, who were at home to West Ham, joined Leeds — hosts to Tottenham — on 31 points.

By virtue of their lead, Everton had their destiny in their hands. They took the opportunity, winning through the only goal of the game by Abdoulaye Doucoure to avoid their first relegation from the top flight since 1951.

Leicester supporters were intently watching the score from the Everton vs. Bournemouth match. The Foxes were on course to stay up when Harvey Barnes put them ahead, but Doucoure's strike meant their eventual 2-1 win was immaterial.

Leeds' sorry season ended with a 4-1 thrashing at home to Tottenham, condemning the Whites to the Championship.

Sporting News followed the final day of the 2022/23 Premier League live and provided score updates, commentary and highlights as they happened.

Full-time: Everton stay in Premier League; Leicester and Leeds are relegated to Championship

"It's professional suicide," Leeds manager Sam Allardyce tells BT Sport following his relegated team's 4-1 defeat at home to Tottenham. "You prepare for a game, you put some tactics into play, look at the opposition's strengths and weaknesses.

"When you make huge errors, Harry Kane's going to take full advantage. Our quality of finishing is exceptionally poor. Tottenham have better quality than we have and showed that in front of goal. That says it all for Leeds' season: we've scored quite a few goals but couldn't get the points.

"I wanted to go out with a sense of pride today but couldn't get it, unfortunately. You can preach to the players as much as you want: most goals are scored by losing the balls in your own half and the opposition capitalising on mistake.

"We made critical errors at the wrong time. We get back into the game, lift the crowd a bit, score a really good goal and then, in the space of two minutes, they've scored again. It's about getting your basics right. It's a pretty simple game. So many coaches are trying to complicate it but it's never been complicated. What you do in both boxes is most important."

Allardyce says he could stay at the club but is forthright about the task ahead. "It's been a pretty big saga for the club," says the former England boss.

"It's very sad that this club is getting relegated after working so hard to get back into the Premier League for so long. The rebuild has to be well planned by everybody at the club.

"Do they still want me? What is the outlook, strategy and staffing - both on and off the field - going to look like? Where do you want to go? That's a pretty big strategy that has to be put down. If that's going in the right direction for me and the board, we'll see."

Full-time: Everton stay in Premier League; Leicester and Leeds are relegated to Championship

"They can be happy momentarily but they should not be where they should be year in, year out – fighting for their lives," former England defender Gary Neville says, discussing Everton on Sky Sports. "The fans are the best thing about this football club."

Former Wales midfielder Robbie Savage tells BT Sport: "Well done to Sean Dyche. They've done it on the final day. But obviously huge disappointment for my old club, Leicester."

Full-time: EVERTON STAY IN THE PREMIER LEAGUE; LEICESTER AND LEEDS ARE RELEGATED

Fans rush onto the pitch! Blue smoke breaks out! Jordan Pickford is mobbed!

Everton save themselves by beating Bournemouth 1-0 on the final day of the Premier League season. Former champions Leicester are relegated despite beating West Ham 2-1. Leeds go down with a whimper, thrashed 4-1 at home by Tottenham.

90+7 mins: Leicester have beaten West Ham 2-1 at home. Their players are on the pitch watching the action from Everton.

90+5 mins: GOAL! Leeds 1-4 Tottenham (Lucas Moura)

Leeds are relegated. We can say it. And Tottenham won't qualify for Europe because Aston Villa have beaten Brighton 2-1 at Villa Park.

90 mins: There will be 10 minutes of added time at Everton! Just in case the home fans' nerves weren't sufficiently shredded...

88 mins: Joe Wright speaks from Goodison Park...

Dwight McNeil's deep cross was met by James Tarkowski, but he got under the ball and headed it towards the top of the Sir Philip Carter Park stand. Everton have a little longer to hold on here.

Follow the finale live!

85 mins: Ethan Pinnock, who's just signed a new contract at Brentford, has put them 1-0 ahead at home to champions Manchester City.

Brentford have had an excellent season but won't be rewarded with European qualification, as it stands.

82 mins: A reminder of where we're at: Everton are staying up unless they concede an equaliser, in which case Leicester will survive.

Leeds are doomed whatever happens unless they score at least three times in about 10 minutes.

Tottenham won't qualify for Europe despite their likely win against Leeds unless Brighton equalise at Aston Villa, where the hosts lead 2-1.

79 mins: GOAL! Leicester 2-1 West Ham (Pablo Fornals)

Over to Raj Mahill at King Power Stadium...

West Ham have one back. Fornals receives the ball on the left wing and, under no pressure whatsoever, runs into the box as the defenders back off. He finishes with his right foot, hitting the near post on the way in.

Leicester are still on course to stay up if Everton concede an equaliser. Otherwise, they're going down. Follow Raj's blog!

77 mins: "Abdoulaye Doucoure was employed by Sean Dyche as a striker after he didn't get one in during the transfer window," says former England goalkeeper Rachel Brown-Finnis of Everton's potential hero today, speaking to BT Sport.

"He's improved his striking just at the right time of the season."

75 mins: There are some amazing scorelines with less severe ramifications today.

Diogo Jota's just made it 4-4 at Southampton, where Liverpool had fallen 4-3 behind shortly beforehand. What a game that sounds like.

72 mins: Well, that comeback lasted a long time. Pedro Porro had loads of room. So did Harry Kane. The England skipper dinked a delightful finish across Joel Robles and in off the base of the post.

That's how Dom Farrell saw Tottenham's third. Keep up with the action live from Elland Road

69 mins: GOAL! Leeds 1-3 Tottenham (Harry Kane)

Oh dear. That is surely that as the England captain scores his second. Leeds now need to score at least three times in little more than 20 minutes to have any chance of staying up.

Everton are safe for the moment.

67 mins: GOAL! Leeds 1-2 Tottenham

Jack Harrison pulls one back for Leeds! They need to score at least two more to have any chance of staying up... you wouldn't bet on it, but you never know.

66 mins: Ex-Premier League hotshot Chris Sutton isn't holding back on Leeds manager Sam Allardyce. "He went with such a negative selection," Sutton tells BT Sport.

"They can't defend anyway. It's been a sorry state of affairs. The Big Sam sham hasn't worked and they're going down with a whimper.

"The whole decision to bring him in for four games was madness. They should have stuck with Javi Gracia but they didn't hold their nerve. It's been an embarassing end to the season."

Say what you really think...

63 mins: Raj Mahill is live at King Power Stadium and here's what the Sporting News observer made of that second goal...

Leicester can only do their own job, and they're doing it well. A free-kick was swung in and met the forehead of Faes, who had an awful night last time out here against Liverpool. His header hit the bottom corner of Fabianski's net to make it 2-0.

Follow Leicester's last-day survival bid live!

62 mins: GOAL! Leicester 2-0 West Ham (Wout Faes)

Leicester are doing their bit to stay up! It won't be enough if Everton win – but Dean Smith's side are currently one Bournemouth goal from staying up!

59 mins: Joe Wright saw Everton's goal like this...

Goodison Park erupted when Everton went in front! Idrissa Gueye's cross was headed away by Adam Smith but fell kindly to Doucoure on the edge of the box, who lashed a first-time shot into the right-hand corner.

Follow the tense final 30 minutes or so with Joe!

57 mins: GOAL! Everton 1-0 Bournemouth (Abdoulaye Doucoure)

That's Everton out of the relegation zone at Leicester's expense, the makeshift striker doing the business!

"It's a beautiful strike," says former Manchester United midfielder Robbie Savage on BT Sport, pointing out that Bournemouth goalkeeper Mark Travers was unsighted through a crowd of players.

"Is that the goal that keeps Everton up?"

55 mins: Manchester United, who've already qualified for the UEFA Champions League, have come from behind to move 2-1 ahead at home to Fulham. Bruno Fernandes is the scorer.

53 mins: Quick recap: Leicester are on course to survive because they're 1-0 ahead at home to West Ham.

Everton and Leeds are going down while Aston Villa are on course for Europe.

51 mins: Dom Farrell, who's reporting live for us from Elland Road, has this to impart...

There have been chants of "you're not fit to wear the shirt" and other such ditties since the second Spurs goal. Rasmus Kristensen booms a cross to no one and there's a hail of boos. This is going to be a long 40 minutes for the Leeds players.

There were similarities to the first goal in that Porro was given free reign to do whatever he liked down the left channel. This time, he decided to thump a shot beyond Robles.

See if Leeds can save themselves by following Dom's blog!

49 mins: There's been an intriguing turnaround at Southampton, where the hosts, who were 2-0 behind early on, are now 3-2 ahead against Liverpool. Kamal Sulemana has scored his second there.

47 mins: GOAL! Leeds 0-2 Tottenham (Pedro Porro)

That could be curtains for Leeds!

Pedro Porro enters the penalty area on the right and swerves a fierce diagonal shot into the far corner of the net beyond Joel Robles' dive.

"Porro lashes the shot across Robles," says former Premier League winner Chris Sutton on BT Sport. "He's excited – maybe he doesn't know about the Aston Villa score.

"Leeds have to score three. It's not going to happen on a miserable day for them. It was a devastating finish and it's a horrible moment for Big Sam. This is going to turn ugly now at Elland road."

46 mins: We're back underway. A reminder: Leicester will be safe on goal difference as it stands, while Everton will go down by virtue of a seven-goal inferiority and Leeds will be three points further back.

HALF-TIME: "It's terrible from a Leeds point of view," former Tottenham striker Peter Crouch tells BT Sport about Spurs' goal. "Harry Kane is always going to put that in the back of the net. You can see that Leeds are just throwing balls into the box."

Leeds legend Gary McAllister is unimpressed with the hosts and feels they have made the wrong move by trying to make the pitch slow to stop Spurs' counterattacks.

"Three of Leeds' four half-chances have fallen to centre-backs," he adds. "Adam Forshaw has been the only bright point for them."

HALF-TIME: Everton and Leeds are on course to be relegated, with Leicester staying in the Premier League.

That Harvey Barnes goal for the Foxes is the really important one of the half, in terms of changing the live table.

Here are your halftime scores:

Chelsea 1 Newcastle United 1

Everton 0 Bournemouth 0

Leeds United 0 Tottenham Hotspur 1

Aston Villa 2 Brighton and Hove Albion 1

Manchester United 1 Fulham 1

Arsenal 3 Wolverhampton Wanderers 0

Southampton 2 Liverpool 2

Crystal Palace 0 Nottingham Forest 1

Brentford 0 Manchester City 0

Leicester City 1 West Ham United 0

42nd min: Catching up with the goals, Taiwo Awoniyi has put Nottingham Forest ahead at Crystal Palace.

Jadon Sancho has equalised for Man United at home to Fulham. It's 1-1 there.

39th min: Here's The Sporting News' Raj Mahill at Leicester...

We've got our first false goal rumour of the afternoon! Huge cheers around the stadium but there's no goal at Goodison Park as yet. What a goal that was from Leicester. Harvey Barnes played it to Kelechi Iheanacho, who has been brilliant, in the box and the Nigerian immediately returned it to the winger to take out two defenders in the process. Barnes slotted past Lukasz Fabianski from a tight angle to give us lift off at the King Power!

Head over to Raj's live blog to follow the Foxes' escape attempt!

37th min: Let's remind ourselves of the state of play...

Everton and Leeds are going down at the moment – the Toffees on goal difference behind Leicester, with Leeds three points behind.

Aston Villa are still set for Europe, although Deniz Undav has now scored for Brighton to make it 2-1 to the hosts at Villa Park.

34th min: GOAL! Leicester 1-0 West Ham (Harvey Barnes)

Summon the swingometer! It's the first big twist of the afternoon!

Leicester top scorer Harvey Barnes takes his team out of the relegation zone. The King Power Stadium goes wild.

"If it stays the same, there'll be more pressure on Everton," former Toffees midfielder Leon Osman tells BBC Radio 5 Live.

"Can they deal with that pressure? They need to create more chances. Abdoulaye Doucoure is doing it singlehandedly, at the moment. Demarai Gray needs to add more."

32nd min: Only the finest of soothsayers could have predicted how some of these games are going this season, and the drama isn't necessarily at the grounds you'd expect.

Arsenal are 3-0 up on Wolves because Bukayo Saka has scored during what has been a wonderful season for the England livewire.

Kirean Trippier's scored an own-goal to draw Chelsea level at home to Newcastle. And most surprisingly, Southampton have rallied from 2-0 down to make it 2-2 against visitors Liverpool, Kamaldeen Sulemana scoring their second.

29th min: The Sporting News' Joe Wright is at Goodison Park.

You'd probably say Everton look the more likely to score, but it's very scrappy out there. The home fans are furious that Ryan Christie escaped a yellow card for a foul on James Garner, who did well under pressure to bring the ball out of defence down the right.

Everton are on course to stay up. See if they finish the job courtesy of Joe's updates!

26th min: Tottenham's enthusiasm may wane when they hear about Aston Villa's exploits against Brighton. After the Seagulls had a Deniz Undav goal ruled out, Ollie Watkins has now made it 2-0 to continue his sensational season.

Unless Villa drop points, Spurs can't qualify for Europe.

23rd min: "West Ham are starting to get a foothold in this game," former England goalkeeper Rachel Brown-Finnis tells BT Sport about West Ham's efforts at Leicester.

"Aaron Cresswell has been teeing up Said Benrahma, who's set up a couple of opportunities for Michail Antonio. It had been all Leicester but West Ham are starting to stamp their authority on this game a little bit more.

20th min: No changes at the bottom, but goals galore elsewhere!

Arsenal are 2-0 ahead at home to Wolves with Granit Xhaka's second of the afternoon. Departing Liverpool star Roberto Firmino put his side 2-0 up at Southampton, but James Ward-Prowse has pulled one back.

And in perhaps the biggest upset of the afternoon so far, Kenny Tete has given Fulham a 1-0 advantage at Manchester United!

17th min: Sounds entertaining at King Power Stadium, where Raj Mahill reports:

End-to-end stuff now. Iheanacho collects a fantastic long ball inside the penalty area but Aguerd cleans up superbly, which sets up an attack that ends in an effort cutting in from the left from Antonio.

Leicester need to win, as it stands. Follow that one live with Raj!

15th min: Here's Dom Farrell at Elland Road:

Leeds are chasing this, but very frantically already. I guess they have to be. Wober goes into the book before they cough possession up in midfield once again.

Doesn't sound great for the Whites. Follow all the action with Dom live!

12th min: More goals! Granit Xhaka has given Arsenal a 1-0 lead at home to Wolves.

10th min: No other goals yet at the bottom but two of the teams near the top have made bright starts: Anthony Gordon has given Newcastle the lead at Chelsea and Diogo Jota has put Liverpool ahead at relegated Southampton.

7th min: Bad news elsewhere for Spurs: Douglas Luiz has put Aston Villa 1-0 ahead at home to Brighton, which means they currently occupy that last European qualification place of seventh!

5th min: That goal doesn't make any difference to the bottom three. With Leeds a goal behind and Leicester drawing 0-0 at home to West Ham, Everton are set to escape the drop. They're currently goalless with Bournemouth.

2nd min: GOAL! Leeds 0-1 Tottenham (Harry Kane)

Leeds boss Sam Allardyce shakes his head as Harry Kane gives Spurs, who are after a UEFA Europa Conference League spot, the lead!

"What an absolute nightmare," says former Premier League hotshot Chris Sutton on BT Sport. "Talk about deflating, from Leeds’ point of view. What a start for Tottenham."

20 mins to KO: A reminder of where to find our live coverage of the three potentially crucial matches at the foot of the Premier League today...

Joe Wright is at Everton vs. Bournemouth

Raj Mahill has made his way to Leicester vs. West Ham

Dom Farrell has journeyed to Leeds vs. Spurs

Three huge games, three reporters who are a joy to read. Get stuck in.

40 mins to KO: Leicester boss Dean Smith has been speaking to Sky Sports. "I feel all right, actually – it's just a game we have to win, then hope other results go for us," he says.

"The lads seem to be in a good place. Have no regrets, leave it all out there and we have players we can bring on.

"Leeds are irrelevant to us, we just need to win the game. The Everton result is obviously one that can hinder us. I'm sure our supporters will let us know."

1 hour to KO: Sean Dyche applauds the Evertonians who are already in the ground and poses for photos as he walks across the pitch.

"We are stretched," Dyche tells Sky Sports. "We've never had a truly settled side since I got here. We've got players out there who can win a game, and that's what we're trying to do."

On whether Everton will be aware of results elsewhere, Dyche says: "It's impossible not to, with the amount of media coverage and gadgets buzzing in people's pockets.

"I want the players to be relaxed and take on the challenge. I want my players to be calm under pressure – but equally, go and play. It's in our hands and we've got to look out for ourselves. It's that obvious."

1 hours 20 mins to KO: Let's hear from the pundits for the first time this afternoon. "I really think it could be torturous here, especially if Leicester get a goal," says former Liverpool stalwart Jamie Carragher, speaking to Sky Sports at Goodison Park. "There have been nerves here for months. This could be a long 90 minutes."

Manchester United legend Roy Keane offers his thoughts on Toffees boss Sean Dyche, who was appointed on January 30. "He knew the job was going to be difficult," says Keane. "He knew there weren't many goalscorers. But to be playing at home on the last day of the season – he would have taken that. Especially against Bournemouth, who have nothing to play for."

1 hours 40 mins to KO: Our team of reporters are on the ground today to keep you up to speed with all the latest.

Here's where to follow:

Everton vs. Bournemouth with Joe Wright

Leicester vs. West Ham with Raj Mahill

Leeds vs. Tottenham with Dom Farrell

Now that is a great trio of writers. Enjoy!

2 hours to KO: Hello and welcome to The Sporting News' live coverage of what promises to be a typically tense end to the Premier League season!

We'll keep you updated with the latest from our live blogs, what experts are saying about the games and how the table looks as Leeds, Leicester and Everton bid to avoid Premier League relegation on the final day of the 2022/23 season.
