Celtic and Rangers will write the latest chapter of their age-old rivalry when they clash at Hampden Park in Sunday’s Scottish League Cup final.

The Old Firm clubs cast a huge shadow of dominance across football in Scotland and the League Cup is no exception.

They are out in front as the most successful clubs in the history of the competition, going back to when Rangers beat Aberdeen in the inaugural edition back in 1946/47.

But which club has lifted the trophy the most? And which teams outside of the Glasgow duopoly have managed to get their hands on some silverware?

Celtic vs Rangers: Who has won most Scottish League Cups?

Irrespective of whether or not they are successful on Sunday, February 26, Rangers will still hold sway at the top of the all-time list with 27 Scottish League Cup wins.

Celtic are next with 20 triumphs, and they have trimmed the gap considerably over the past decade, winning six since Rangers’ 27th League Cup in 2010/11.

It is a reversal of what unfolded during the 15-year gap between Celtic’s ninth and 10th titles (1982/83 to 1997/98), when Rangers lifted nine of the League Cups on offer.

Aberdeen, who are third on the all-time list with six League Cup wins, won half of their overall haul during this same period.

Celtic vs Rangers in Scottish League Cup final: How many times in history?

This will be the 16th time Celtic and Rangers have played one another in the League Cup final, with all of their meetings taking place at Hampden Park in Glasgow.

Rangers have nine wins to Celtic’s six, an overall head-to-head that would have seemed unlikely in 1957/58 when the Bhoys ran out 7-1 winners in the first Old Firm final.

Since then, the games have been very tight affairs, with Celtic's 2-0 win in 2008/09 the only other Old Firm final to have produced a winning margin of more than one goal.

Celtic also prevailed in their most recent meeting in 2019/20, with Christopher Jullien scoring the only goal. Ange Postecoglu’s side are looking to retain the title they won last year via a 2-1 win over Hibernian.
