The Premier League has paced the global football world when it comes to financial power, and nowhere is that muscle flexed more than in the transfer market.

The 2022 summer transfer window was not the exclusive domain of Premier League clubs, but it showed their willingness to spend big in the right areas. Top English sides like Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United have all opened their wallets to bring in players, with hopes of translating cash into results on the pitch.

Over the course of the most recent transfer window (and beyond if you take into account the last few years), Premier League clubs from top to bottom have shown just how deep their pockets are.

Even the newly promoted sides have been able to flex their financial might, thanks to the revenues that the EPL provides with one of the biggest domestic payouts in world football.

Here, The Sporting News brings you an overview of the summer 2022 window and just how much each Premier League club spent.

Premier League club spending in 2022/23 transfer window

While Arsenal led the EPL spending early in the window after the Gunners splurged for Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko of Manchester City, other deals involving the competition saw the Gunners passed.

Chelsea's mega-deals for Brighton defender Marc Cucurella and Leicester's Wesley Fofana vaulted the Blues to the top of the spending list for the summer. And thanks to the most expensive signing of the transfer window anywhere in Europe (Antony from Ajax), Manchester United are right behind the Blues when it comes to net spend.

On the other end of the table, defending Premier League champions Man City have thus far recouped the most transfer income of any team, thanks to the aforementioned departure of the Arsenal duo plus Raheem Sterling going to Chelsea.

Brighton, meanwhile, have the largest positive net spend largely thanks to the Cucurella deal.

Nottingham Forest by far have the highest net spend of any new 2022/23 Premier League club, bringing in a record 21 new players who all cost at least £145.76 million. That's no surprise, given their need to strengthen for a bid to stay in the top flight, having won promotion via the Championship playoff last term.

Leicester City have spent the least of any Premier League team on the transfer market, seeing more quality leave the club than come in.

Most expensive Premier League transfers 2022/23

Manchester United have made two of the four most expensive acquisitions in the Premier League, landing Ajax's Antony and Real Madrid captain Casemiro. Antony tops any transfer deal in all of Europe this summer, and the Lisandro Martinez price tag also breaks into the list below.

Chelsea are up there as well with two pricey signings of their own in defenders Wesley Fofana, and Marc Cucurella. A third player who cost the Blues a pretty penny is winger Raheem Sterling.

By comparison, defending champions Manchester City and Liverpool, who finished first and second last season, had one expensive signing each and it came at the forward position. Newcastle, Tottenham, and Arsenal employed a similar strategy.

Fofana and Cucurella also make for the highest outgoing transfers by any Premier League club, and Chelsea were the buyers for each. Meanwhile, the deal that saw Raphinha head to Barcelona opened the opportunity for Leeds to reinvest into its squad with plenty of shrewd business.

Interestingly, seven of the top 10 outgoing Premier League transfers went to other English clubs, suggesting the top flight likes to recycle talent rather than send it abroad to other European leagues.
