The opening weekend of the 2022-23 Premier League season brought with it many storylines.

From Liverpool drawing with Fulham, Manchester United losing to Brighton and Erling Haaland scoring a double on his league debut for Manchester City.

One recurring theme, however, was that of own goals.

Four were scored in total across round one - two more than the current top scorers in the Premier League

In 2021, the Premier League saw its 1000th own goal scored when Tottenham's Sergio Reguilon put one past his own goalkeeper.

With so many scored, The Sporting News takes a look at the players, teams and season most affiliated with own goals.

Most Premier League own goals scored by a player

The unfortunate honour for most Premier League own goals scored by a single player goes to Richard Dunne

The retired Irish centre-back put the ball in his own net 10 times across 432 top-flight appearances.

Dunne is currently well clear in the Premier League own-goal standings with the closest active player, Jonny Evans, still four shy of his record.

Brighton's Lewis Dunk scored the most Premier League own goals in a single season with four of his five coming in the 2017-18 season alone.

Player Own Goals
Richard Dunne 10
Jamie Carragher  7
Phil Jagielka 7
Martin Skrtel 7
Jonny Evans 6
Wes Brown 6
Ryan Shawcross 6
Frank Sinclair 6
Seamus Coleman 5
Scott Dann 5
Lewis Dunk 5

Most Premier League own goals scored by a club

As things stand, Everton have scored the most own goals in Premier League history with 59.

Frank Lampard's side conceded a league-high five own goals in the 2021-22 campaign as they narrowly avoided relegation

While a frustrating tag to have, the record is a testament to Everton's longevity in the top-flight.

Aston Villa (50) and Arsenal (46) follow not too far behind the Toffees when it comes to own goals in the Premier League era.

Team Own Goals
Everton 59
Aston Villa 50
Arsenal 46
West Ham 45

Which team has benefitted the most from own goals in the Premier League?

While teams would prefer scoring their goals, some have benefitted more than others when it comes to own goals in the Premier League.

Manchester United have received the most luck in this department with 71 own goals scored against them.

Liverpool (63) and Arsenal (60) have also had fortune smile on them regularly when it comes to own goals.

While Everton have scored 59 own goals, they have been rewarded with seeing opponents score 46 against them too.

Most Premier League own goals in a season

With four own goals already scored after a single Premier League round in 2022-23, could this season see the most ever?

Plenty more will have to be scored if it's to beat the 2009-10 season which saw a record 51 own goals scored and 45 different players getting an 'OG' next to their name.

The next most came three seasons later in 2012-13 when 47 own goals were recorded.

At the other end, the 1998-99 season saw just 17 own goals scored - the fewest in Premier League history.

Season Own Goals
2009-10 51
2012-13 47
2013-14 45
2010-11 40
2006-07 40
2020-21 38
2011-12 38
2008-09 37
1993-94 37
