After capitulating in the north London derby on Thursday, Arsenal's once commanding lead for fourth place in the Premier League table is now in serious peril.

With Spurs winning on Saturday against Burnley, it's now up to Arsenal to retake the final Champions League position. If Arsenal slip up against a surging Newcastle side, it could be the death of the Gunners' Champions League hopes.

The Magpies have lost two in a row, but those pair of defeats came at the hands of runaway Premier League leaders Manchester City and Liverpool. Prior to those matches, Newcastle had won four straight against mid-table sides. While the Magpies have little to play for, having staved off relegation successfully, Arsenal will need to take advantage of a side without motivation.

Otherwise, Gunners fans will end up with a season lost like sand through their fingers.

Newcastle vs. Arsenal projected lineups

Newcastle has reinforcements on the way as Ryan Fraser is back in the squad and could return to the field this weekend. Kieran Trippier and Callum Wilson both returned from injury last time out and made substitute appearances, and could be available to start should Eddie Howe deem it so.

Former Arsenal players Isaac Hayden and Joe Willock both miss out, while Jonjo ShelveyFederico Fernandez, and Jamal Lewis are all on the sidelines as well.

Newcastle projected starting lineup (4-3-3): Dubravka (GK) — Trippier, Lascelles, Burn, Targett — Longstaff, Guimaraes, Joelinton — Almiron, Wilson, Saint-Maximin.

Arsenal's injury problems are well documented, with the absences of Kieran Tierney and Thomas Partey causing real squad problems. Mohamed Elneny has filled in admirably for Partey, but Tierney's injury is causing real full-back issues.

Causing additional defensive strain is an injury to Gabriel who was brought off against Tottenham with a muscle injury. His participation is in question, and with such a short turnaround has to be considered a doubt.

Rob Holding is also suspended for his sending-off against Tottenham, deepening the defensive crisis further. Ben White was saved against Spurs, ensuring he is fit to start against Newcastle, but his center-back partner is undetermined. It could be Takehiro Tomiyasu to deputise, or Cedric.

Arsenal projected starting lineup (4-2-3-1): Ramsdale (GK) — Cedric, Tomiyasu, White, Tavares — Xhaka, Elneny — Saka, Odegaard, Smith Rowe — Nketiah.

Odds via DraftKings (USA) & Sports Interaction (Canada)

Arsenal's defensive capitulation to an invigorated Tottenham was the start of a movie that Gunners fans have seen before. The defence is in tatters, with Gabriel injured, Rob Holding suspended, and Ben White still feeling the effects of a previous injury only just now shaken off.

While Newcastle has little to play for, Eddie Howe's men fought Liverpool hard and would love to play spoiler against a vulnerable Gunners side.

Each of Arsenal's last five Premier League matches have gone over 2.5 goals, and three of Newcastle's last five. There's goals in this one given Arsenal's defensive issues. The hosts will want to put on a show for the home fans in the season's final match at St. James' Park and nothing tangible to play for.
