With a new Premier League season kicking off, we've witnessed the usual bevy of new kit releases as well: fresh home shirts, away jerseys and a dose of third kits.

But not all the new threads are made equal. There are a handful that have already proven a hit among some fan bases, while others haven't been met with nearly the same enthusiasm.

We dig into the new looks and rank the hits, while pointing out some of the other looks that might be remembered for the wrong reasons.

Here's The Sporting News ranking of the 10 best — and a few of the worst — Premier League shirts for the 2022/23 season.

Top Premier League kits ranked for 2022/23 season

At this point, most clubs have released at least a home and away shirt for the upcoming Premier League season. Some even chose to release a third kit, while others will keep the selection at two. Only Chelsea have yet to release an away kit, while Leeds finally got to theirs after apologizing to fans for the delay.

After sifting through all the Premier League kits — home, away, and third — for the 2022/23 season, these are the top designs for the upcoming campaign.

11. Man City 2022/23 away kit

Manchester City have had some truly awful away and third kits in recent years, but this is a great look. The yellow combines well with both the black and red, which allows the diagonal stripe pattern to mesh seamlessly with the logos in the foreground.

Unfortunately, it can't rank much higher than 10th on the list because, well, it's not very original. While the design itself may not be an exact replica, it's hard not to think of the Belgian color scheme, especially that of the 2014 World Cup which featured one red and yellow stripe diagonally across a black background. Oh well, it's still a strong look.

10. Liverpool 2022/23 home kit

Liverpool did not stray too far from the classic look, but there's a special feel about this kit.

The cross-hatch background pattern works to perfection, and gives the shirt some depth without ruining the classic plain red look. The subtle red stripe that works up the arm and down the side is kind of weird, but it's not much of a distraction.

9. Southampton 2022/23 home kit

This kit has received some pushback from supporters on social media, but we're fans. The big red stripe down the middle is bold yet not over the top, and the circle on the Sportsbet.io logo matches well with the design, situated on the left border of the stripe. Big fan of the Hummel arrows on the shoulders as well.

The goalkeeper kit that goes along with it is also wonderful (flashes briefly at 0:13 of this kit release video), which is all well and good because the Southampton away kit is truly hideous. More on that shortly.

8. Fulham 2022/23 home kit

Fulham are known for having crisp, clean home kits, and they've got another solid one this season. While it's not quite up to the standards of some in the recent past, it's a high quality product.

The vertical pattern is a nice draw, while fading to produce what looks from afar to be a clean white home shirt. The red squiggle pattern on the collar is an ice touch, and the black down the sides isn't overpowering.

7. Leicester City 2022/23 home kit

Oh man, do we love a good collar. Collars are difficult to pull off, because they are a specific mood, and the kit has to match that mood.

Leicester City and Adidas smashed it out of the park this year, creating a model collar kit for the home fans to enjoy at King Power Stadium. The blue is crisp, the logos are eloquently spaced, and the collar seems perfectly natural as a centerpiece to this well-designed home shirt.

6. Manchester United 2022/23 away kit

While the Manchester United home kit is a clean yet somewhat boring version of the classic Manchester United red, the away kit takes a few more liberties in the right places.

The stripes along the top in red and black pop well on top of the white shirt, and the dashed collar is a nice touch as well. The plain white is a perfect foil for the two-toned Team Viewer logo.

5. Bournemouth 2022/23 home kit

While clean kits are nice and crisp, bold choices should be rewarded when done well.

Bournemouth's home kit this season, from Umbro, is a remarkably bold yet aesthetically pleasing take on the classic vertical stripes design. The black triangles fade well to avoid becoming too jarring, and the yellow and white Dafabet logo slides perfectly on top.

This kit design toes the line of too much without going over the edge. There were a number of bold kit choices by Premier League teams that didn't work this season, but Bournemouth managed to submit a winner.

4. Crystal Palace 2022/23 ALL kits

What's better than one great kit design? How about a trio of great designs that are all woven from the same concept.

It's an increasingly rare occurrence these days, but Crystal Palace managed to pull it off spectacularly. All three kits for Palace this season are based off the same scribble design, and it works brilliantly.

Although, as great as it is, it appears Crystal Palace kit maker Macron may have stolen their own concept straight from Croatian club Hajduk Split's home kit from last season. Recycled designs are never quite as fun.

3. Brighton 2022/23 home kit

Nike have produced for Brighton Hove & Albion one of the most aesthetically pleasing shirts of the 2022/23 Premier League season.

An extremely clean design, the American Express logo fits neatly on top of the vertical stripes. The tiny yellow pinstripes are perfectly cut through the larger blue stripes, and the yellow Nike logo is an excellent foil on top of the white. The yellow collar and sleeve ends are an appealing touch, and the white shorts bring it all together.

2. Leeds United away kit

Well, Leeds United waited until the last moment to release the club's away kit for 2022/23, and boy was it worth the wait.

Dropping just two days before the start of the Premier League season, this gorgeous splash design works in every way. The yellow and blue colors recall the club's official colors but in an exciting layout.

The blue color splotches are in tye-dye format, but aren't so distracting as to take away from the pleasing background yellow color. What a well-done kit, bold yet still within reason.

1. Arsenal 2022/23 away kit

The Arsenal away kit for the 2022/23 season wins Best Kit for the upcoming campaign. A combination of bold color choice and clean shirt design, the kit is an absolute beauty.

The subtle background design stands out, but it fades enough to avoid becoming too distracting. The famed Adidas stripes on the shoulder are a nice touch, and their grey color meshes with the black shirt.

If there is one nitpick, the sponsor logo could probably be moved slightly further down to avoid clashing too closely with the kit and club logos. Otherwise, it's a stunning design.

Worst Premier League kits for 2022/23 season

After running through the best kits in the Premier League, it's only fair that we also touch on a few kits that fell well short of the mark.

Liverpool away kit

As mentioned with the Bournemouth kit, there were a number of bold designs this year that simply do not work. Top of the list is the Liverpool away kit, which looks more like a Magic Eye poster than a football shirt.

Staring at this kit for more than three seconds is dizzying, and that's less than ideal for a 90-minute match.

Southampton & Chelsea away kits

Oddly, Southampton and Chelsea both produced beach-themed away kits that look like they belong on a pair of swim trunks instead of a football shirt. Neither one works.

For Saints, the jersey is a complete mess featuring a distracting design. Both the club crest and sponsor logo are completely lost in the directionless swirls, and it's impossible to know where to look. It's also easy to get dizzy looking at this one for too long.

While Southampton's kit has already been released and is official, Chelsea have yet to officially unveil their away kit, but the design was leaked online weeks ago.

It's not as wacky or hard to look at as the Southampton design, but it still would fit much better as a surf board skin than a football shirt.

Bournemouth has also gone with a tropical design for the away kit, and while the pink and purple color scheme with big fern leaves doesn't exactly work well, it's at least not as painful to look at. The sleeve thing they have going on is pretty terrible, though.
