After close to a decade of Juventus domination, Serie A has become a whole lot more competitive in recent years.

Both AC Milan and Inter Milan ended their respective league title droughts since the start of the decade, with Napoli now hoping to join them in 2022/23.

Luciano Spalletti's side have lost just one Serie A match this season heading into March and have opened up an impressive 18-point gap at the top of the table.

While Napoli won't be getting ahead of themselves with plenty of league games remaining, their fans may rightly be dreaming about a scudetto that has alluded them for far too long.

Last time Napoli won Serie A

Napoli haven't won Serie A for over 30 years with their last scudetto back in the 1989/90 season.

That successful campaign saw them edge out Inter Milan by just two points with superstar Diego Maradona scoring a club-high 16 goals. It was just the second time the Partenopei had become champions of Italy.

Since then, Napoli have finished runner-up on four occasions with all of those close calls coming over the past decade.

They came closest in 2017/18 when Juventus pipped them to the title by just four points. Napoli won 22 of their first 26 league games that season before winning just six of their final 12.

How many times have Napoli won Serie A?

Napoli have won a Serie A title just twice in their history with those triumphs coming in 1986/87 and 1989/90.

Their first scudetto saw Maradona shine bright as they beat Juventus to the league title by three points, despite Ottavio Bianchi's side drawing their final three games.

Three years later and after consecutive second-place finishes, Napoli lifted the scudetto for a second time with five straight wins to end their campaign and seal more silverware.

Despite those triumphs, the Partenopei have finished as runners-up in Serie A eight times and only four clubs have finished second more often.

Have Napoli ever been relegated?

Along with their occasional success, Napoli have also been at the wrong end of the table at times.

The famous Italian club have been relegated from Serie A a total of five times with their last relegation dating back to 2000/01.

Things would only get worse from there and they were relegated again to Serie C for the 2004/05 season after filing for bankruptcy.

They would bounce back quickly though and secured back-to-back promotions, which returned them to Serie A in 2007/08.

They haven't come close to relegation since with their lowest finish in 2008/09 when they came 12th and were still 12 points clear of the drop zone.
