Newcastle United dished out emphatic Carabao Cup revenge against Manchester United as last season's beaten finalists ran out 3-0 winners at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils were back in front of their own fans three days after an abject derby defeat to Manchester City and a much-changed side served up more of the same.
Miguel Almiron came on as an early substitute when Matt Targett suffered a hamstring injury and the Paraguay international found a cool finish after a surging run and precision pass from Tino Livramento.
Newcastle's other young former Chelsea full-back, Lewis Hall, then got in on the act by swiping home a fabulous low volley for his first senior goal.
Erik ten Hag was mocked by the travelling supporters and, although his decision to introduce Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Sofyan Amrabt at halftime did prompt an improvement, the latter was dispossessed for Joe Willock to crash home Newcastle's third.
Willock let out a prolonged and joyous celebration, having marked his first start of a season so far ruined by injury by booking a quarterfinal place. Having dispatched City in the previous round, Eddie Howe's side ensured the other Manchester club comprehensively ran out of road.

MORE: Sir Jim Ratcliffe plans for Man United: Will he sack Erik ten Hag?
Familiar crisis engulfs Manchester United
When the vultures circled around David Moyes in spring 2014, United were completely outplayed in 3-0 home defeats to Liverpool and Manchester City in consecutive home league games. Two years ago, similarly chastening losses to those bitter rivals in close proximity shoved Ole Gunnar Solskjaer closer towards the exit door.
It wasn't supposed to be like this for Ten Hag and there was a genuine sense things might have changed when he led the Red Devils to success in this competition last season. But this was their eighth defeat of a season that is two and a half months old. The weekend surrender to City and this abject showing, as a Newcastle team made up to a significant degree of full-backs showed far greater cohesion and application, felt like history repeating itself.
The former Ajax boss is starting to seem like he is on borrowed time. If Sir Jim Ratcliffe takes charge of United's football operations, he wouldn't have to argue too hard that he needs a new man at the helm. Ten Hag's decisions in the transfer market and on matchdays have been increasingly puzzling in the second half of this year. On the other hand, what's the point? What's to stop another high-class coach coming and getting results with some obviously talented players before the whole thing collapses in on itself again? United are a maddening mess.
New players, new scapegoats, same result for Ten Hag
After losing to City, Bruno Fernandes was criticised for losing his composure and Marcus Rashford the subject of newspaper scorn regarding him going out to socialise and turning up for training on time. Rashford came on at 3-0 down tonight, alongside fellow substitute Fernandes, who took his armband back from Victor Lindelof. Casemiro was skipper before being replaced at halftime and it meant that United fielded more captains (three) than they had managed shots on target (two).
Any move Ten Hag makes at the moment feels inherently and repetitively doomed — the tactical equivalent of Sideshow Bob standing on rakes. Introduce some youthful verve in the form of Hannibal Mejbri and watch him try to get sent off within 20 minutes. Give Mason Mount a platform to show why he was worth £60 million in the final year of his contract and once again witness a footballer harrowingly devoid of confidence.
Chuck on one of the cheaper acquisitions, like Amrabat, who turns the game around briefly before being at fault for the third goal. Diogo Dalot was culpable for the first two, but he signed a five-year contract in May so has plenty of time to polish up his defending.
It won't be lost in the latest post-mortem that this week's punishing losses have been inflicted by the Premier League's two state-owed behemoths. City and Newcastle now enjoy competitive advantages over many of their top-flight counterparts. But United need not be this far behind, given how much they turnover and spend. Now it seems the Glazer's credit cards are maxed out and this disparate rabble is the sum of it all. It is self-inflicted, baked-in misery.
Man United vs Newcastle as it happened updates, highlights, and commentary
Fulltime: The Newcastle fans are delirous. Tonight will ease plenty of the remaining pain from their Wembley defeat to United in February. Nine months on, each club appears to be on an entirely different trajectory. Some of the home supporters remaining boo at the final whistle, but it's more out of obligation than anger. Unquestionably the worst week of Erik ten Hag's tenure and they still have a trip to Fulham to come. Thanks for joining us for this one.
90th minute: There'll be four minutes of additional time, or torture if you're of a Manchester United persuasion. Plenty of their fans have already headed for the exits.
86th minute: Rashford struggles to get a bouncing ball in the box under his spell. Eventually he fires off a shot but it's blocked.
77th minute: Reguilon is booked for kicking the ball away and almost talks himself into another. From the free-kick, Wilson steals in at the back post but Onana holds.
76th minute: Ohhhh, good gracious. Longstaff lines up a volley form all of 30 yards and creams it just past the post. That really would have brought the house down.
74th minute: An actual United chance. Antony slots a ball better the Newcastle centre-backs for Fernandes, who takes his shot early but scuffs wide. Burn and Trippier are replacing Hall and Livramento to see this out for Newcastle.
70th minute: Mount sweeps a wretched shot way over from long range. Forlorn stuff.
68th minute: Fernandes clatters a pass towards Mount with far too much on it. Goal kick.
64th minute: Rashford, Fernandes and Hojlund all on for United. The cavalry have probably arrived too late. For Newcastle, Guimaraes replaces the goalscorer Willock and Wilson is on up front for Gordon.
61st minute: GOOOOOAAAAAAALLLLL!!!!! Joe Willock!!!
This one us against the run of play but it's surely game over. Amrabat, who has been a key part of United's improvement since halftime, is ransacked by Willock and the former Arsenal youngster is off. Gordon's largest intelligent run creates room for the shot and he steers home unerringly from 18 yards.

54th minute: Garnacho's cross is half-cleared. The ball is worked towards Amrabat, who shoots off target from outside the box. More purpose about United, albeit they could only have shown less if they'd all come out and had a lie down.
52nd minute: Ten Hag has decided he's not going to die wondering here. Wan-Bissaka and Reguilon are pushing high up the pitch from full-back. Amrabat is the only holding midfielder, with Hannibal and Mount pushed up behind Martial. You'd expect Newcastle will find openings on the break.
51st minute: Reguilon's cross is deep. Willock and Hall double up on Antony, expecting him to cut onto his left foot and shoot. He does and it's blocked.
48th minute: Wan Bissaka is on to shore United up but he gets forward and a low cross towards Martial. Newcastle scramble behind and deal with the corner.
46th minute: We're back. Two changes for United, with Wan-Bissaka on for Dalot, who was frankly shocking during that first half. Casemiro gets 45 minutes on his return, with Amrabat into the fray. Hannibal remains on and you have to hope he's calmed down.
Halftime: Newcastle's fans were running through some ole's as their side hogged the ball towards the end of the half. Plenty of changes but United have been utterly wretched again. They look broken, have conceded two, rarely looked like scoring themselves and keeping 11 men on the pitch might start to become a real challenge if this carries on. Ten Hag's tenure has witnessed a fair few dramatic comebacks and there are some big hitters on the bench, but are they just too far gone at this point? Come back in a little while to find out.
45th minute+3: Another attempt from distance and this is a nice one from Mount, swerving away from Dubravka, who has to watchfully push behind.
45th minute: Dalot cracks one from upwards of 25 yards. It's well hit but always going wide. It's in the conversation for United's best attempt of a half to which five minutes will be added.
42nd minute: Willock cuts in from the left and curls a well-hit shot towards goal. Onana sees it all the way, though, and that's easy work.
41st minute: Hannibal needs some treatment. Bruno Fernandes is warming up. His sunny disposition just what everyone needs at Old Trafford right now.
36th minute: GOOOOOAAAAAAALLLLL!!!!! Lewis Hall!!!
Glorious finish from Hall. It all comes form United switching off for a free-kick on halfway. They're a complete rabble. Gordon puts enough pressure on Maguire so that he can only head Willock's cross as far as Hall, who dispatches a wonderful volley low into the bottom right corner.

35th minute: "You're getting sacked in the morning," chirrup the Newcastle fans. Who could they be directing that towards? Reguilon blasts off target from way downtown.
32nd minute: Now United attack down the other flank. Dalot whips in a fine ball but Mount makes such a mess of his jump to attempt a header that he handles and it's a free-kick to Newcastle.
31st minute: Good response from Garnacho, who whips a ball in from the left and Mount prods wide at the near post.
29th minute: GOOOOOAAAAAAALLLLL!!!!! Miguel Almiron!!!
The substitute breaks the deadlock but this is all about a gargantuan assist from Livramento. The youngster muscled Garnacho off the ball in his right-back position and then embarked upon a surging run up the field. He then had the presence of mind to delay a wonderful pass to Almiron, who had the beating of Dalot to fire past Onana.

25th minute: Newcastle free-kick in their own half, Hannibal chucks the ball way past everyone. He could have been booked for time-wasting there, technically. What's going on? Is he doing a bit?
23rd minute: Nice interplay between Antony and Martial (that's not at all confusing) that's interrupted by Willocks launching into a tackle. He makes it cleanly but is now hobbling. Not another one?!?
22nd minute: Joelinton lays it off to Ritchie 25 yards out. You know that cross that was off target? Well, this shot is worse. Still, at least he's getting involved.
21st minute: Newcastle are on top here. Ritchie gets some space on the left but booms his cross way beyond Gordon.
20th minute: Time to lead by example and take care of young Hannibal. Casemiro gets himself booked. Brilliant.
Casemiro is on a yellow card, another booking away from becoming the first player to be sent off four times in a calendar year for Manchester United.

17th minute: Mate, what on earth are you doing? Hannibal clatters into Krafth late. He's a very lucky boy. You have to think that if he hadn't already been booked he would have been then.
16th minute: Ritchie swings a free-kick in from the left. Lindelof needs two bites at clearing it behind for a corner. Maguire gets up to avert any immediate danger.
14th minute: Hannibal blunders into Newcastle captain Longstaff to pick up an entirely needless booking.
13th minute: Antony tees up Casemiro for a first-time shot from 25 yards. It's the first attempt on goal of any description in the match. Dubravka tumbles to his left for a routine save.
11th minute: Newcastle will look to use Gordon's pace in behind the United defence. Krafth pumps a long ball in his direction but fellow Sweden international Lindelof reads it to head clear.
4th minute: Miguel Almiron into the action. In terms of on-field personnel, it's an upgrade as Joelinton drops back into midfield. But this absolutely was not in the script for Howe and his over-worked medical department.
3rd minute: Well, if you were curious over how Targett might look in midfield you're not going to find out. The former Aston Villa defender is down and appears to have hurt his hamstring. Another injury blow for Eddie Howe.
1st minute: We're underway. Looks like it will be Gordon playing as Newcastle's central attacker, with Joelinton on the left of the attack. Of their compendium of full-backs, Hall is at left-back, with Targett tucking into midfield.
5 mins prior to kickoff: Here come the teams after the familiar strains of "This Is The One" by the Stone Roses. Crackling atmosphere. Old Trafford - including a sizable contingent of travelling Newcastle fans - ios ready to go.
35 mins prior to kickoff: Bruno Fernandes' petulant behaviour during the closing stages of the Manchester derby led Roy Keane and others to suggest he should be stripped of the United captaincy. This is all well and good from a "something must be done!" point of view, but what are you giving it to? Harry Maguire was the previous winner in this dubious game of pass the parcel and a fat lot of good it did him.
Casemiro is the man in possession tonight. The former Real Madrid midfielder feels more like typical captaincy material but has struggled badly for his best form this season.
55 mins prior to kickoff: This is the United XI. It feels like a big night for Mason Mount, with Alejandro Garnacho and Hannibal among those to come in. Casemiro starts after his injury lay-off and Aaron Wan-Bissaka is among the substitutes.

1 hour prior to kickoff: The team news is in and it's changes galore for both sides. Here's how the visitors shape up. Joe Willock makes his first start of the season following injury. Eddie Howe is taking no chances over Callum Wilson's fitness, given Alexander Isak is already sidelined, meaning Joelinton reverts to his old position of centre-forward.

1 hr 20 mins prior to kickoff: Recent setbacks make it easy to forget just how much it felt like United were heading in the right direction under Ten Hag on their way to glory at Wembley last season. The 7-0 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield followed two games later and they've arguably failed to recover their poise since, with the mitigating circumstances of a wretched injury list.

1 hr 40 mins prior to kickoff: A lot has been said about Manchester United in the days since their derby day embarrassment. Gary Neville (as usual) has been one of the loudest concerned voiced. This analysis, especially when you consider the majesty of Ten Hag's Ajax teams, feels particularly damning.
