Manchester City moved into first place in the Premier League table thanks to a dramatic penalty-kick game-winner against Fulham scored by Erling Haaland in his return to action following his injury. It was a 2-1 victory in a match that saw the Citizens play the final hour with 10 men.

Haaland's 95th-minute penalty conversion went under Fulham goalkeeper Bernd Leno, as Man City moved one point above Arsenal in the standings. The Gunners take on Chelsea on Sunday with a chance to retake the top spot.

With Erling Haaland starting on the bench, City were in command from the opening whistle and they took the lead through Haaland's replacement, Julian Alvarez. But the match was turned on its head on a 26th-minute play that resulted in a red card to City's Joao Cancelo and a penalty for Fulham.

After a long ball into the City half squirted into the path of Fulham winger Harry Wilson, Cancelo shouldered him in the box and referee Darren England had no doubts. Fulham attacking mid Andreas Pereira buried the penalty to equalize 1-1.

Man City always looked the most likely to find a winner, especially with Haaland coming on with 25 minutes remaining. The big Norwegian headed home with 15 minutes left, but it was scratched after the VAR spotted Haaland in an offside position.

The match looked destined to finish 1-1, but Fulham's American left-back Antonee Robinson clipped Kevin De Bruyne in the box, resulting in a clear penalty, and Haaland stepped up to convert for his 18th goal of the season.

Fulham nearly earned a point without star forward Aleksandar Mitrovic, who sat out with an ankle knock. Striker Carlos Vinicius replaced him at the top of the Cottagers' attack as the visitors failed to improve on their 7th-place position entering the match.

Watch in Australia:

93rd min.: Penalty for Man City! American left-back Antonee Robinson kicks Kevin De Bruyne in the box and the referee points to the spot. There was no doubt about it.

90th min.: Five minutes of stoppage time.

88th min.: SUB Fulham. Now it's Luke Harris on for Andreas Pereira, who scored the Fulham penalty.

Man City look like they're out of ideas, and it's clear they're frustrated with referee Darren England. If the result remains 1-1, the referee is sure to get an earful.

80th min.: SUB Fulham. Kevin Mbabu on for Willian, and he'll play on the right wing. Fulham have enough fresh bodies up top that you figure manager Marco Silva thinks he can steal a winner.

77th min.: SUBS Fulham. Daniel James replaces Harry Wilson, and Tom Cairney is on for forward Carlos Vinicius.

James will play center forward, Cairney will fill in at attacking mid, Andreas Pereira goes wide left, and Willian wide right.

74th min.: City goal disallowed! Haaland heads home a De Bruyne cross, but it's scratched for the narrowest of offsides after a VAR check.

69th min.: Man City chance! A sliding Haaland reaches for a cross at the far post, but he can't get the ball on target. There's been a spark that his presence has given the defending champs.

64th min.: SUBS Man City. Erling Haaland comes on for Julian Alvarez and Phil Foden replaces Jack Grealish wide left. Pep Guardiola hopes they can spark an attack that's been quiet after the break.

63rd min.: YELLOW CARD to Fulham right-back Kenny Tete, who will miss Fulham's next match.

61st min.: Chance Fulham! Right winger Harry Wilson receives the ball and cuts inside Nathan Ake before firing a shot that finishes wide left. Wilson is starting after the Achilles injury to Neeskens Kebano.

48th min.: Erling Haaland is up off the bench and begins warmups. He's likely coming into this match if Man City can't find another goal soon.

46th min.: The second half is underway with no changes from either side.

Halftime: Man City 1, Fulham 1

Halftime: Man City looked in total control of the match until the 26th minute red card to Joao Cancelo for denial of an obvious goal-scoring opportunity. It was the right call from the official, and you wonder if Cancelo needed to commit the foul with Ederson coming off his line.

Man City still look like the team most likely to score and they nearly did through Jack Grealish and then Manuel Akanji. But Fulham boss Marco Silva is surely designing a plan in the locker room to take advantage of their man advantage.

48th+ min.: YELLOW CARD to Bernardo Silva for his protests after he was chopped down by Harry Wilson. Silva wanted a caution shown to the Fulham player and he let the ref know it.

46th+ min.: Chance Man City! After two straight corners, Bernd Leno has to come up with a stop on a Manuel Akanji header in the box. You felt he could've done better with that opportunity.

45th min.: YELLOW CARD to Fulham's Harrison Reed who fouled Kevin De Bruyne, but it's Reed who took the brunt of it. He takes a while before getting up and getting cautioned.

42nd min.: Man City chance! A Jack Grealish curler from the left side misses the far post. It didn't curl enough. The home side is still looking the more likely to score despite being a man down.

32nd min.: Nathan Ake is now filling in for Cancelo at left-back, with midfielder Rodri moving back to center-back in place of Ake. It's now a 4-4-1 for City with Alvarez the lone forward.

Bernardo Silva is also playing in central midfield in lieu of Rodri, with De Bruyne wide right in the midfield four.

28th min.: Goal Fulham! 1-1. Andreas Pereira buries it. And now Man City have to play the next 60 minutes down a man.

Watch in USA:

Watch in Canada:

26th min.: Penalty for Fulham! And red card to Joao Cancelo! The Man City left back shoulders Harry Wilson in the back inside the box. Cancelo tries to explain himself to Guardiola on the sideline, but the Man City manager doesn't want to hear it.

Watch in USA:

Watch in Australia:

24th min.: Goal disallowed for Man City for offside. There is a clear offside on the set piece and John Stones's put-back effort is annulled.

11th min.: Goal Man City! 1-0. Ilkay Gundogan feeds Julian Alvarez who made the run in behind and the through ball hits him in stride. Alvarez roofs his shot and Bernd Leno had a poor attempt there. The Argentine has scored in all four of his home starts.

Watch in USA:

Watch in Canada:

Watch in Australia:

9th min.: Chance Man City! Kevin De Bruyne shoots from distance and Fulham 'keeper Bernd Leno tips it away for a corner. Nothing comes of it.

6th min.: YELLOW CARD to Fulham attacking mid Andreas Pereira. He rakes the Achilles of Rodrigo on a challenge and he goes in the book.

3rd min.: Fulham already under pressure. Man City flinging the ball from one end of Fulham's penalty area to the other. But the Cottagers survive for now.

Jack Grealish is already attacking Fulham right-back Kenny Tete. Bernardo Silva is playing on the opposite side, attacking wide right.

1st min.: Fulham kick us off and the referee orders the kickoff to happen for a second time. Fulham in black, Man City in blue.

60 minutes from kickoff: Both lineups are out:

75 minutes from kickoff: Reporters at the Etihad confirm that Erling Haaland will be on the bench against Fulham. So he'll be available to Guardiola if needed.

2 hours from kickoff: Interesting analysis from Guardiola on Aleksandar Mitrovic, who he says "pushes defenders to the limits."

"When they put long balls to Mitrovic, you have to understand there's a big guarantee we are going to lose that ball. So [we have to] prepare for the second [ball] and defend the far post really well, because he's a dangerous player."

2 hours from kickoff: Player-turned-pundit Jan Aage Fjortoft with a video update from the Etihad, in which he also says that Man City are in the running to acquire Jude Bellingham despite all the rumors concentrating on Real Madrid and Liverpool this past week.

3 hours from kickoff: Some interesting statistical nuggets for this game:

  • Man City have won 14 straight at home in all competitions;
  • Last team to take points at the Etihad was Liverpool in April 2022 (2-2 draw);
  • Man City have won 12 straight against Fulham in all competitions (since 2012);
  • The last time Fulham beat Man City was a 3-1 win in April 2009;
  • Pep Guardiola has defeated Marco Silva in all nine head-to-head battles (31-5 goals).

3.5 hours from kickoff: If the upset happens today, remember the name of former Fulham regular Steed Malbranque.

4.5 hours from kickoff: Former Man City player Micah Richards says he's still captaining Erling Haaland in Fantasy Premier League, no matter the doubts that surround his status for today's match.

4.5 hours from kickoff: Guardiola says he hasn't been surprised by Fulham's strong start to the season with the Cottagers in 7th place in the table.

5 hours from kickoff: Pep Guardiola takes the high road after Zlatan Ibrahimovic's comments on his ego. There is definitely no love lost from their time together at Barcelona.

Man City vs. Fulham lineups

Will Haaland play against Fulham? That's the big question in the lead-up though it's hard to see him making more than a cameo off the bench after two days of training and a spell of 10 days on the sidelines with a foot injury.

Guardiola kept his team fresh in midweek, resting several regulars for the Champions League win over Sevilla. The Citizens are also boosted by the return of defender Manuel Akanji, who starts ahead of Ruben Dias. Meanwhile, Bernardo Silva is pushed into the front three with Phil Foden sitting.

Kalvin Phillips (out 11 matches since Sept. 14), and Kyle Walker (out nine matches since Oct. 2) continue to be out with shoulder and groin injuries, respectively.

Man City starting lineup (4-3-3, right to left): 31-Ederson (GK) — 5-John Stones, 25-Manuel Akanji, 6-Nathan Ake, 7-Joao Cancelo — 17-Kevin De Bruyne, 16-Rodri, 8-Ilkay Gundogan (capt.) — 20-Bernardo Silva, 19-Julian Alvarez, 10-Jack Grealish

Man City subs (9): 18-Stefan Ortega (GK), 82-Rico Lewis, 3-Ruben Dias,, 14-Aymeric Laporte, 21-Sergio Gomez, 80-Cole Palmer, 26-Riyad Mahrez, 47-Phil Foden, 9-Erling Haaland

Fulham see an ankle injury rule out star scorer Aleksandar Mitrovic. The club also suffered a major injury blow as winger Neeskens Kebano succumbed to an Achilles injury in training and will be sidelined for months. It'll be Harry Wilson to replace Kebano at winger.

Right-back Bobby Reid is suspended for yellow card accumulation, and Manor Solomon is also out long-term, but manager Marco Silva has Layvin Kurzawa back after a calf injury.

Fulham starting lineup (4-2-3-1, right to left): 17-Bernd Leno (GK) — 2-Kenny Tete, 31-Issa Diop, 13-Tim Ream, 33-Antonee Robinson — 6-Harrison Reed, 26-Joao Palhinha — 8-Harry Wilson, 18-Andreas Pereira, 20-Willian — 30-Carlos Vinicius

Fulham subs (9): 1-Marek Rodak (GK), 27-Kevin Mbabu, 3-Layvin Kurzawa, 4-Tosin Adarabioyo, 5-Shane Duffy, 38-Luke Bernard Harris, 25-Josh Onomah, 10-Tom Cairney, 21-Daniel James

Man City vs. Fulham odds, prediction

With Manchester City such heavy home favorites and plenty of goals expected in the match based on the odds, it's tough finding an attractive enough betting angle on this game. Even Man City forward Julian Alvarez to score a goal is given as a foregone conclusion (-165 anytime scorer).

Fulham have conceded plenty of goals on their travels thus far in 2022/23 with 13 allowed in just seven away matches across all competitions. That's nearly a clip of two goals per game as the defensive side of the ball continues to be their Achilles' heel despite two shutouts against Wolves and Everton. Man City is several rungs above those teams they've conceded against, and there's every chance the Citizens can score and win each half.

  • Pick: Manchester City to win both halves (-115)
  • Prediction: Manchester City 3, Fulham 0
