Man City vs Bayern Munich history: Head to head record in Champions League action image

All eyes will be on Pep Guardiola as Manchester City face Bayern Munich in the 2022/23 Champions League quarterfinals on April 11 (1st leg) and April 19 (2nd leg).

Guardiola will face his former club, taking his City side to Bavaria for the second leg in what will be his first game back in front of his old fans, this time on a quest to win a first-ever Champions League title at City.

The defending Premier League champions ruthlessly knocked out Bayern's Bundesliga rivals RB Leipzig in the Round of 16 with Erling Haaland netting a record-equalling five Champions League goals in their 7-0 second leg win.

Bayern's path to the last eight was more demanding, as they won home and away against PSG, to block Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe & Co. from a route to the final, in another frustrating campaign for the Parisians

Pre-Pep Bayern vs Roberto Mancini's City

City's first foray into the Champions League saw them paired with Bayern in the 2011/12 group stage as Roberto Mancini looked to make a splash on the European stage.

Jupp Heynckes' side brushed them off in their first meeting, with Mario Gomez scoring twice in a 2-0 home win at the Allianz Arena, to leave City's knockout stage hopes in jeopardy.

Despite rallying in the final four games, including a 2-0 win in Manchester against Bayern, it was not enough to haul the Citizens above Napoli into second place in Group A, as they bowed out at the first hurdle in their first Champions League.

Pep fails on Bayern Euro mission

Guardiola arrived at Bayern at the start of 2013/14, with big shoes to fill after Heynckes lifted the Champions League at the end of the previous campaign.

On the back of his dominance at Barcelona, Guardiola was tipped to carry on the Heynckes progress, but the process never really clicked for him in Germany.

City were drawn in the same group as Bayern again in 2013/14, with Guardiola guiding them to a 3-1 win on his first trip to Manchester, before an impressive showing from Manuel Pellegrini's team sealed a 3-2 fightback victory in the reverse fixture.

The familiarity stretched into the following 2014/15 campaign, as Sergio Aguero inspired City to a 3-2 home win to drag Pellegrini's team over the line to another Round of 16 spot.
