Fresh off securing the EFL Cup title, Liverpool turn their sights to the other domestic knockout competition as they host Southampton in the fifth round of the FA Cup on Wednesday.

Amidst a brutal run of injuries, the Reds have seen strong performances from youth team players who have stepped up in a huge way to carry the club in the short-term. The likes of Harvey Elliott, Conor Bradley, Jayden Danns, and James McConnell played a strong role in the extra-time victory over Chelsea at Wembley.

As Alisson, Mohamed Salah, Diogo Jota, Darwin Nunez, and many others remain sidelined, Jurgen Klopp will need to continue leaning on his young guns moving forward.

Southampton will not be a pushover in this match, as they sit fourth in the Championship looking for a promotion push, but they've slumped of late, dropping 2-1 results to Hull City and Millwall in the last two games plus a 3-1 defeat to Bristol City earlier this month.

Liverpool vs Southampton prediction, odds

  • Moneyline lean: Liverpool (-180)
  • Score prediction: Liverpool 3-1 Southampton

In most cases, a Liverpool team with this many injuries against a strong Championship side would give pause for a possible upset, but between the exceptional fortitude displayed by the Reds and the recent Southampton slide, it's hard to see room for a shock result here.

Liverpool vs Southampton best bet

  • Pick: Liverpool over 2.5 goals
  • Odds: +145 (DraftKings)

Saints have struggled defensively of late, conceding 10 goals in their last five Championship matches since blanking Watford in the last FA Cup round.

On the flip side, Liverpool would have won the EFL Cup final in regulation had it not been for the brilliance of Djordje Petrovic in goal for Chelsea, and Gavin Bazunu has been the second-worst goalkeeper in the Championship based on goals/xGOT differential. Luiz Diaz should feast even with the Liverpool midfield so thin.

Liverpool vs Southampton prop bet

  • Pick: Adam Armstrong to score or assist a goal
  • Odds: +175 (FanDuel)

The odds on both teams to score have no value, but considering Liverpool's injuries, there will be chances for the Saints as they look to keep up with the Reds' attack. By far the most prolific player up front for Southampton is Adam Armstrong, who has a monstrous 16 goals and 11 assists so far in the Championship this season.

He's quieted of late, with just four goals and two assists in 2024, but his involvement up front has not. He has 26 shots in those 11 games, and 11 key passes as well. His shot-creating actions have dipped significantly, contributing to Southampton's recent skid, but that will only create reason for Russell Martin to game-plan for Armstrong to be more involved in the final product in this match knowing he will have to keep Southampton at pace with the prolific Liverpool attack.
