ANFIELD, LIVERPOOL — Liverpool ended a three-game winless run and inflicted Sean Dyche's first defeat as Everton manager as they ran out 2-0 winners in the Merseyside derby.

Jurgen Klopp's side shook off their poor recent form to dominate their local rivals, who had only last week impressed in beating Premier League leaders Arsenal.

They did need some luck to do it, with James Tarkowski striking the post just seconds before Mohamed Salah opened the scoring in finishing off a lightning first-half counterattack.

However, the Reds were good value for a win that was sealed by a second-half Cody Gakpo goal — his first for the club since arriving from PSV Eindhoven in January.

Liverpool's Stefan Bajcetic a class act

Klopp summed it up perfectly when asked in one pre-match interview why he had stuck with youngster Stefan Bajcetic despite making two other changes to his midfield.

"A player in form," the German said of his young talent. "You could see it in all the games. As bad as they were, imagine the Wolves game without him."

To say Bajcetic rewarded that decision would be understating it — he was arguably the best midfielder on the pitch across the 90 minutes.

Firm in the challenge and sheer class on the ball, Liverpool fans have every justification for getting excited about a teenager who deserves to remain in the starting XI for the foreseeable future.

Cody Gakpo starting to show more

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher recently declared that he couldn't understand why the club had signed Gakpo, a player who he believed did not look like a good fit for Klopp's football.

Well, he might have a better idea of how the Dutchman will eventually fit in after watching this 90 minutes from the gantry at Anfield.

Getting a first goal for the club was a big moment in terms of his confidence, but it was Gakpo's overall performance that was most encouraging of all.

He did not shirk his defensive duties and showed some brilliant touches to evade the attentions of Everton defenders before invariably picking out a good pass.

Klopp's latest addition may need more time to show his absolute best, but there is no doubting he will be massively useful going forward.

No reason to worry for Everton

After the joy of beating Arsenal last time out, Everton fans were brought firmly back to earth by a customary defeat at Anfield.

But, while the Premier League table still makes for grim reading, losing to a fired-up Liverpool should not provide major cause for concern.

In Dyche, the Toffees have a manager who has already shown he can get them sufficiently organised to get out of the relegation scrap in which they find themselves.

This one will hurt, of course, but attentions should quickly turn to a vital showdown with Leeds United at the weekend.

Liverpool vs Everton as it happened, highlights

Final: Liverpool 2-0 Everton

FULLTIME: All over at Anfield and Liverpool claim a 2-0 win over rivals Everton thanks to goals from Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo. That looked a lot like a return to form for the Reds, while the visitors still have work to do as they look to escape the relegation zone.

90th min: Four minutes to be added on.

87th min: An almighty kerfuffle on the touchline as Robertson kicks the ball away to stop Everton taking a quick free-kick. Once the pushing and shoving subsides, Liverpool's Scottish defender gets a yellow card, as does Pickford.

82nd min: Bajcetic nicks the ball in a deep position and drives forward with a host of options joining him on the counter.

He ultimately picks out Salah, but Tarkowski does brilliantly to slide in and block the shot.

77th min: Dyche rolling the dice now as Dwight McNeil and Andre Onana make way for Neal Maupay and Tom Davies.

If Everton could pinch a goal now then Liverpool would surely start to get nervy.

69th min: Darwin Nunez leaving the field to be replaced by Diogo Jota, whose return from injury is met with huge roars by the Anfield crowd.

66th min: Coady cynically cuts short a brilliantly worked counter involving Nunez and Bajcetic and goes in the book.

61st min: A change for Everton, with Ellis Simms replaced by Demarai Gray.

57th min: Iwobi has a go from 25 yards out, but he can't find the space to generate any power and it's easily collected by Alisson.

49th min: GOAL! And Everton are made to pay for their wasted opportunity as they are carved open.

Robertson cuts in off the left before feeding Salah, who feeds Alexander-Arnold to put in an unstoppable low cross that gives Gakpo a tap-in at the back post. That's his first goal for the club and what a time to get it.

48th min: The Toffees win a free-kick in a dangerous area on the left-hand side but it is wasted as McNeil overhits his delivery. Dyche will be desperate to make better use of situations like that.

46th min: Everton get things restarted.

Halftime: Liverpool 2-0 Everton

Halftime: Nunez smashes a left-footed effort goalward inside the box, but it is bravely blocked and that's the end of a half that saw Liverpool get their noses in front through Salah.

42nd min: Liverpool have clearly been buoyed by that breakthrough but, to their credit, Everton are holding firm. Their gameplan won't change too much unless a one-goal lead for the hosts turns into two.

36th min: GOAL! Liverpool lead through Salah!!!

It's an utterly chaotic passage of play that leads to the goal, starting with Tarkowski striking the far post with a towering header from a corner delivery. The hosts keep their heads after that let-off and quickly charge up the pitch through Nunez, who centres with his left foot to allow Salah to poke past the stranded Pickford.

A huge minute in this game.

30th min: Liverpool clear a corner as far as Gueye, who wellies a volleyed attempt straight back over the bar.

25th min: Everton now really struggling to get out as Liverpool swarm them and force hopeful long balls to the isolated Ellis Simms. The visitors will only care about one thing, though: the fact it's still 0-0.

17th min: Nunez tries an overhead kick that inadvertently finds the head of Gakpo, but he can only send it wide of the Kop-end goal.

That's about as close as either side has come so far.

10th min: Nunez cuts in off the left-hand side and forces Tarkowski to dive in and give away a foul which is *just* outside the box.

Liverpool threatening but the subsequent free-kick is a poor one and Everton get it away.

5th min: A frantic start on the pitch, with no real chances to speak of. Off it, Everton chairman Bill Kenwright has been spotted in the crowd. This despite him having missed the last couple of games at Goodison Park amid fan protests.

1st min: Liverpool get the game underway.

5 mins from kickoff: Flags out on the Kop and both ends of the ground giving it everything, the atmosphere is absolutely electric here as we close in on kickoff.

20 mins from kickoff: The players out for their warm-ups and it's much-needed at what is a chilly Anfield this evening.

45 mins from kickoff: So, a huge opportunity for Everton youngster Ellis Simms tonight, who is favoured over Neal Maupay for a start up top.

And could that be a 4-4-2 with Jordan Henderson wide right for Liverpool?

1 hour from kickoff: Team news is in!

Liverpool: Alisson, Alexander-Arnold, Gomez, Matip, Robertson, Henderson, Fabinho, Bajcetic, Salah, Nunez, Gakpo.

Everton: Pickford, Coleman, Coady, Tarkowski, Mykolenko, McNeil, Doucoure, Gueye, Onana, Iwobi, Simms

1 hour 20 mins from kickoff: Could this be a special night for Evertonians?

1 hour 45 mins from kickoff: A late shift in the odds on tonight's match and it's good news for Everton fans. They've gone from 21/4 to 17/4 with the bookmakers while Liverpool are out to 3/5 from 1/2. The absence of Thiago Alcantara and the Reds' wobbly form a factor, no doubt.

2 hrs from kickoff: Everton supporters will be sensing an opportunity to claim a rare Anfield win when they take on Liverpool tonight. The Toffees have only won once at the home of their near-neighbours since 1999, and that came in a season where fans were kept out due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Can they finally clinch a victory that supporters in the away end can cherish this time around? Stick with us to find out.

Liverpool vs Everton lineups

Jordan Henderson and Fabinho return to the Liverpool starting XI as Jurgen Klopp looks to shore his midfield up physically for the Merseyside derby.

That is a move partially influenced by the loss of Thiago Alcantara to a hip flexor issue, but there is better news elsewhere on the injury front.

Luis Diaz and Ibrahima Konate remain out, but Roberto Firmino, Virgil van Dijk and Diogo Jota return to the substitute's bench.

Liverpool lineup (4-3-3): Alisson (GK) — Alexander-Arnold, Gomez, Matip, Robertson — Henderson, Fabinho, Bajcetic — Salah, Nunez, Gakpo

Subs: Kelleher, Van Dijk, Milner, Keita, Firmino, Elliott, Jota, Tsimikas, Phillips

    • Injured: Konate, Arthur, Thiago, Diaz
    • Suspended: None

Ellis Simms benefits from the absence of the injured Dominic Calvert-Lewin to earn a start, with Neal Maupay remaining on the bench.

Sean Dyche's team is otherwise unchanged from the win over Arsenal, though Michael Keane and Ben Godfrey are fit enough to feature among the subs.

Everton lineup (4-5-1): Pickford (GK) — Coleman, Coady, Tarkowski, Mykolenko — McNeil, Doucoure, Gueye, Onana, Iwobi — Simms

Subs: Begovic, Holgate, Keane, Gray, Mina, Maupay, Godfrey, Davies, Vinagre

    • Injured: Patterson, Townsend, Calvert-Lewin, Garner
    • Suspended: None
