Bayern Munich's problems intensified on Wednesday as they suffered a 1-0 defeat to Lazio in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League Round of 16 tie.

Ciro Immobile converted a penalty after Dayot Upamecano had been sent off to give the Serie A side the advantage in this knockout meeting.

The goal from the former Borussia Dortmund man piled further pressure on Bayern boss Thomas Tuchel, who is facing a battle to ensure the season does not end in bitter disappointment.

MORE: How Man City eased to victory over Copenhagen

Thomas Tuchel's side looked imperious in the group stage as they finished above Copenhagen, Galatasaray and Manchester United to book their place in the knockout phase.

However, things have not been progressing as planned this season. A 3-0 defeat to unbeaten Bundesliga leaders Bayer Leverkusen four days ago left them five points adrift in the domestic title race and facing a very real prospect that their 11-year-long stranglehold on Germany's top division could come to an end.

Lazio have not enjoyed an especially positive season and sit eighth in the Serie A standings, but with a vociferous Stadio Olimpico crowd behind them, they limited Bayern to zero shots on target despite the visitors' dominance of the ball.

Harry Kane seemed barely a passenger in the contest, whereas Immobile looked the more likely to score long before he converted a confident second-half penalty after Upamecano was shown a straight red card for what was deemed a dangerously high challenge on Gustav Isaksen in the Bayern box.

Tuchel cut a forlorn figure on the touchline as he watched his side labour in their attempts to find an equaliser. He will likely face plenty more questions over his position between now and the second leg as Bayern’s season threatens to unravel.
