Gregg Berhalter was on thin ice —at least in fans' collective minds — entering the 2024 Copa America.

The U.S. men's national team needed to put on a good showing at the tournament for him to cement himself in the managerial position ahead of the 2026 World Cup. Instead, the USMNT exited in the group stage after losses to Panama and Uruguay.

The early elimination leaves Berhalter's future with the national team as shaky as ever.

Still, the U.S. Soccer Federation is taking time to contemplate its decision. Leadership is likely weighing the impact of parting with Berhalter and what type of replacement they could get for the solid coach.

Thus, while a change may seem necessary to some, Berhalter isn't guaranteed to be looking for work in the near future.

Here's a look back at Berhalter's USMNT tenure and his coaching record to this point as fans await word on his future with the squad.

Gregg Berhalter coaching record

Berhalter has posted a record of 44-13-17 over 74 matches with the U.S. men's national team. His 44 wins are the third-most by a USMNT manager of all time, trailing only Bruce Arena (81) and Jurgen Klinsmann (55).

Berhalter helped lead the U.S. back to the World Cup in 2022 after the country shockingly missed out on the tournament in 2018. The team fared well in CONCACAF competition and improved from 25th in the world at the time of Berhalter's takeover to 11th in FIFA's most recent rankings.

Still, the USMNT hasn't closed the gap on other world powers despite boasting one of its most talented rosters in recent memory. That — along with an exit before the knockout rounds in the 2024 Copa America — could be enough to doom Berhalter.

Gregg Berhalter coaching history

Berhalter had eight years of managerial experience before joining the USMNT. He got his start at Hammarby in the Swedish League from 2011-13 before becoming the Columbus Crew's manager for the 2013 MLS season.

Berhalter held his role with the Crew until 2018, when he was named head coach of the USMNT.

Berhalter had a combined record of 92-66-81 during his time with Hammarby and Columbus. Below is a breakdown of his performance at each club, as well as his USMNT stints:

Berhalter also had plenty of playing experience, playing 18 years across several years and earning 44 caps for the USMNT. That made him an ideal fit to take on the job in 2018, and while things may not end well for him, he still has had a solid run.

While Berhalter's tenure in the United States hasn't gone as planned of late, he still provided the team with many bright moments. Now, it's just a matter of seeing whether the USMNT wants to give him one last chance to right the ship or if it looks to greener pastures for a new leader.
