Italian giants Juventus, having fallen back in the Serie A table due to a major points deduction for a financial accounting scandal, are now prioritising European competition as they travel to Germany to meet Freiburg in the second leg of their Europa League Round of 16 matchup.

Juve rode an Angel Di Maria goal to a 1-0 victory in the first leg, but will rue other missed chances as they had countless opportunities to pad their lead. That will boost Freiburg, who are back in their friendly confines in Germany and will know they are better than what they showed in Italy.

This is already the furthest point Freiburg have reached in European competition, surpassing their Round of 32 showing in the 2001/02 UEFA Cup. They sit fifth in the Bundesliga, suggesting they could see another opportunity at this competition next season, but the race for European places in Germany is tight and they will know now is the time to set the bar even higher.

A one-goal turnaround is more than doable for the second-leg hosts, but they will need a far better performance than last week to accomplish such a goal.

Freiburg vs Juventus prediction, odds

  • Moneyline lean: Draw (+225)
  • Score prediction: Freiburg 1-1 Juventus

Freiburg were miserably bad in the first leg, lucky to get out of Turin with just a one-goal deficit. They had just a single shot in the entire match to Juve's 20, a miserably bad gulf in attacking intent.

That was an exaggerated but accurate reflection of Freiburg's road woes. However, at home they're a much better team. They should be able to push Juve for qualification, but will ultimately fall short, as many teams have done so far against Italian teams in European competitions.

    Freiburg vs Juventus best bet

    • Pick: Both teams to score — YES
    • Odds: -110 (BetMGM)

Freiburg's woeful attacking impetus in the first leg has nuked some of the game flow odds, and we can take advantage here. While the over 2.5 total is a big ask, both teams should be able to find the back of the net in this game.

The German side has been spotty at best on the road all season long, but at home they've been much stronger. This team has been shut out at home just one time all year, and even in that September league match against Gladbach, they put up over 1.0 xG but came up short on the scoresheet.

Juve have been good defensively of late, but not great, and they coughed up a pair at home against Sampdoria in the league. It's not wild to think both teams could push for goals here, especially at around even-money odds.

    Freiburg vs Juventus prop bet

    • Pick: Kilian Sildilla to be booked
    • Odds: +230 (FanDuel)

    • Pick: Leonardo Bonucci to be booked
    • Odds: +260 (FanDuel)

While this game may not feature a ton of goals, it will certainly be chippy. Freiburg have the second-most yellow cards earned in Bundesliga play since 2023 began, and Juve contributed a pair in the opener. I wrestled with whether to take individual players or the combined over on total yellow cards, but 4.5 cards is a high bar to clear. So instead, we picked two players who could generate a fair return with a great chance to be booked.

Young Freiburg defender Kilian Sildilla is a great choice, having committed three fouls in the first leg and winning just one of eight ground duels matched up against in-form Juventus chance creator Filip Kostic. Meanwhile, Juventus veteran Leonardo Bonucci is another option, as he came on to spell the injured Alex Sandro in the first leg and was booked, reflecting his slowing abilities at 35 years old.
