Arsenal head to Old Trafford in Matchweek 6 seeking to extend their season-opening win streak to six matches. If they accomplish the feat, it would prove a historic achievement.
A late Gabriel Martinelli winner allowed the Gunners to keep their win streak alive and clinch a 2-1 home victory against Aston Villa. In the match prior to that, they needed to come back from a 1-0 deficit at home against Fulham.
Their five wins from five matches obviously place the Gunners at the top of the pack. But with a match against Manchester United on the horizon, Arsenal will need to be at their very best again to continue in their winning ways.
Here are the best starts ever made to a single Premier League campaign.

5 straight wins to start a Premier League season
- 2022/23: Arsenal
- 2018/19: Chelsea
- 2015/16: Manchester City
- 2011/12: Manchester United
- 2010/11: Chelsea
- 2004/05: Arsenal
That's right, after winning five matches to start this season, Mikel Arteta's Arsenal side has already emulated the 2004/05 Arsenal side, who accomplished the same feat.
That means that Gabriel Jesus & Co. have already made history by matching a club record. One more win and the 2022/23 Gunners side will stand alone, an unexpected development given the disappointments of recent seasons.
It's notable that the 2004/05 campaign ultimately went on to finish second in the final Premier League standings.
6 straight wins to start a Premier League season
- 2018/19: Liverpool
- 2016/17: Manchester City
- 2009/10: Chelsea
- 1994/95: Newcastle
Four sides in Premier League history have begun a campaign with six consecutive wins, the most recent of which was Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool side in 2018/19 who went on to record 97 points that season (2nd place, two points away from the title).
Manchester City also managed the feat during the 2016/17 season when they scored at least two goals in each of their opening six matches to claim six victories, though they ended the season in third spot.
Chelsea fared better in the 2009/10 campaign, however, as they went on to win the title after claiming six straight wins to open the season.
Newcastle also managed the same feat in 1994/95 and went through their first 11 matches unbeaten. They ultimately finished in sixth spot, though, under manger Kevin Keegan after a poor end to the season.
8 wins to start a Premier League season
- 2019/20: Liverpool
Liverpool went two better than the previous group in 2019/20, winning all eight of their opening matches of the season.
That was a solid enough start to see the famous Merseyside club go on to win their first-ever Premier League title, taking 99 points in the process.
In fact, the Reds stunned their rivals and actually won 26 of their opening 27 matches that campaign, with the only blemish on their record coming with a 1-1 draw against Manchester United in Matchweek 9.
Such was their dominance throughout the season, Jurgen Klopp's side eventually finished 18 points clear of second-place Manchester City, and a stunning 33 points clear of rivals Manchester United who had to settle for a third-place finish. They also won 18 and drew just one of their 19 home league matches.
9 wins to start a Premier League season
- 2005/06: Chelsea
But the longest winning start to a Premier League season goes to Chelsea, who during the 2009/10 campaign tasted victory in nine straight fixtures to open the season.
Under manager Jose Mourinho, the season ended with a second straight Premier League trophy as they beat closest title rivals Manchester United 3-0 at Stamford Bridge in April.
The London side also very nearly remained perfect all season long on home soil, winning 18 and drawing one of their home league outings throughout.
