Licking their wounds from a domestic humbling at the hands of Bayer Leverkusen over the weekend, German giants Bayern Munich hope to begin their Champions League knockout journey on a better note as they visit Lazio in the Italian capital on Wednesday.

Bayern fell five points back in the Bundesliga title race, unable to become the first team all season to beat high-flying Xabi Alonso and Bayer 04. With their 11-year domestic title streak in real jeopardy, they must refocus to European football and a chase for their first UCL title in four years.

The Bavarians are struggling with a mix of injuries and poor form, with Serge Gnabry and Alphonso Davies both absent with fitness concerns, while Jamal Musiala and Harry Kane begin to regress up front. Musiala doesn't have a single goal contribution in over a month, while Kane's explosive season has slowed with just two goals in his last five league games.

Lazio, meanwhile, are also in the midst of a difficult stretch, sitting eighth in the Serie A table with just one win in their last four matches across all competition. They are one of the streakiest sides in Europe, with their rough patch coming on the heels of a five-game winning streak, which itself followed a three-match winless stretch.

Bayern Munich vs Lazio prediction, odds

  • Moneyline lean: Bayern Munich (-145)
  • Score prediction: Lazio 0-2 Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich is vulnerable at the moment, succumbing to a bout of doldrums up front. Against a defensively-minded side like Lazio, they will know opportunities will be at a premium across the 90 minutes.

Yet it's hard to imagine the Bavarians dropping a result here against an opponent who has struggled to maintain consistency across the full season. Lazio is such a hot-and-cold team it's monumentally challenging to know which version of the Italian side you'll see, but against top teams, they've struggled repeatedly.

Against the top four in the Serie A table (Inter, Juventus, AC Milan, Atalanta), they have just one win in five matches, indicating they are not one of Italy's most dangerous clubs this year. Bayern should find some rhythm across the match, setting themselves up for a more explosive second leg.

Bayern Munich vs Lazio: best bet

Lazio has some of the most unconventional home-road splits in Europe. They are exceedingly defensive at home, scoring just 12 Serie A goals while conceding only seven, while on the road those totals open up to 16 goals scored and 17 conceded. In the Champions League group stage, they conceded just one goal in three games in the Italian capital, while on the road they shipped six.

Bayern, meanwhile profile the opposite — which is more traditional. They have scored 37 goals on a similar xG total at Allianz Arena, but that drops to 22 goals on 24 xG away from home.

With their best attacking players in a slump, it's not inconceivable that this first leg is approached with a bit more caution by both sides before the second leg in Germany which is likely to liven up a bit.

Bayern Munich vs Lazio prop bet

  • Pick: Lazio over 2.5 yellow cards
  • Odds: +144 (FanDuel)

Lazio have had real difficulties with fouling this season — while they remain in the bottom half of Italian teams in terms of number of fouls, they've picked up the second-most bookings of any Serie A club, indicating their ability to foul without seeing the referee's ire has been poor.

They've managed at least to keep a lid on things at home, but with French referee Francois Letexlier brandishing 4.3 yellows per match in Ligue 1 this year, they will be prone to more cautions as Bayern swarm the attacking third.
