Is there a bank holiday if England wins Women's World Cup final? Latest plans for Lionesses UK return image

England face the biggest game in a generation as Sarina Wiegman's Lionesses take on Spain in the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup final on August 20.

Wiegman's charges are through to their-ever first World Cup final after storming past co-hosts Australia in the semifinal as they prepare to face La Roja at Stadium Australia in Sydney

The Lionesses memorably won the European Championships last summer and Wiegman and her players are desperate to translate that into a first world title in the coming days.

Ahead of the final, fans back in the UK will be making plans to potentially celebrate amid growing calls for a UK bank holiday if the Lionesses win.

Will there be a bank holiday if England win the Women's World Cup?

Despite the possibility of a victory parade, similar to the one in Trafalgar Square after the Euro 2022 win, the request for a bank holiday has been rejected by the UK Government despite political pressure.

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer, and other key UK politicians have led the calls to create a bank holiday at short notice if the Lionesses are victorious in Sydney.

"We congratulate the Lionesses on their fantastic achievement in getting to the Women's World Cup final. The current pattern of public and bank holidays is well established and there are no plans to change this", added a government spokesperson.

The call for a bank holiday after the Euro 2022 final was not accepted under former Prime Minister Boris Johnson and current incumbent Rishi Sunak has followed suit.
