Despite losing their opening fixture 1-0 to Italy, Argentina will be hoping to build on their promising 2019 campaign and secure their first ever victory at a Women's World Cup.

Desperate to escape the group stage for the first time, Argentina will now face South Africa and powerhouse Sweden in Group G after defeat to the Italians.

With Sweden expected to finish on top of the group, it will likely be a fight for second place between the other three nations.

The Sporting News takes a closer look at the final squad called up by Argentina manager German Portanova for the tournament.

Argentina final Women's World Cup squad

Experience starts at the back in this Argentina squad, with 39 year-old captain, Vanina Correa retaining her spot in goal and Adriana Sachs commanding the backline with 32 caps.

The excitement in the middle of the pitch could well come from 21 year-old, Dalila Ippolito, who travelled to France for the 2019 World Cup when she was only 17.

Argentina have named seven forwards in their squad, including Estafania Banini, who has scored 8 times in her 16 appearances for her country.

Argentina stars, strengths, and weaknesses

Stars

Vanina Correa has been a mainstay in the Argentina squad since her debut way back in 2003. The fact that neither of the other two goalkeepers in the squad have made a single appearance for Argentina speaks to her dominance with the gloves. The captain's importance when it comes to organising her defence and leading her team cannot be understated.

Yamila Rodriguez staked her claim as Argentina's main star when she bagged six goals at the 2022 Copa America. She will likely be deployed in the middle of a front-three and will be expected to finish off whatever chances Argentina can create throughout the tournament.

Estefania Banini is an excitement machine. Her eight goals in 16 caps reflect just how dangerous she can be. She will likely start on the flank and be afforded freedom to roam inwards to both create chances and finish them.

Strengths

Goals. Argentina undeniably have goals in their 23-strong squad. Seven forwards have travelled to Australia and New Zealand, they have scored 39 goals for their country between them.

Also, the experience of Correa, who has featured in games for Argentina for 20 years, will have an immense impact on the group. That level of experience will help the team gel and attack any challenged that comes their way with confidence and clarity.

Weaknesses

There is a very clear issue for the white and sky blues coming into the tournament. Argentina have played just nine matches at Women's World Cup finals and they have conceded a scarcely believable 37 goals. The 11-0 loss to Germany in 2007 will still sting the memory of some supporters.

Argentina projected lineup

  • Argentina projected starting lineup (4-3-3): Correa (GK) — Braun, Mayorga, Cometti, Stabile — Ippolito, Nunez, Benitez — Rodriguez, Larroquete, Banini

Can Argentina replace players on World Cup roster?

According to the official rules of the World Cup, players on the final squad can only be replaced in the event of a serious illness or injury up to 24 hours before the start of their team's first match.

The injury or illness needs to be assessed and judged by FIFA to be serious enough to prevent the player from taking part in the World Cup.
