Hosts India begin their campaign in the tournament on October 8 against five-time world champions Australia on October 8 in Chennai.
The 2019 edition of the World Cup witnessed the net run rate (NRR) to be a deciding factor for the semi-final slots as New Zealand were tied on points (11) with Pakistan.
Due to a superior NRR, the Kiwis qualified for the knockout stage and eventually came very close to winning their maiden title in England.

What is Net Run Rate in Cricket?
ICC, over the years, has preferred to use the NRR method to break ties among teams who have the same points in multi-nation competitions across all formats.
If two teams are tied on points in the round-robin stage then their league position is determined using the NRR method.
How is Net Run Rate calculated?
The NRR of a team is calculated by subtracting the average runs per over scored against that team throughout the competition from the average runs per over scored by that team throughout the tournament.
If a team is bowled out before the completion of their full quota of overs, NRR will be calculated based on the full quota of overs and not the actual number of overs the team played in a match.
Also, it has to be noted that NRR can be calculated for only those matches that have produced results or results of matches that have been determined via the D/L method.
How will NRR decide points table and semi-final qualification for ICC ODI tournament?
If two or more teams are tied on the same points after their nine games in the league, the teams with better NRR will finish higher on the points table.
