India handed debuts to Sarfaraz Khan and Dhruv Jurel, while Mohammed Siraj replaced Mukesh Kumar. England pacer Mark Wood came in for spinner Shoaib Bashir, and had India in trouble early on by getting rid of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill, reducing the hosts to 33/3.

But Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja put on 204 for the fourth wicket, rescuing India and helping them post 326/5 at stumps.

One of the bright sparks for India on the day was the performance of debutant Sarfaraz Khan, who was padded up for over four hours before getting a chance to bat. He took the England bowling by the scruff of the neck, smashing his way to 50 off 48 balls, before finally being dismissed for 62.

At the non-striker's end, Sarfaraz responded to a call for a quick single from Ravindra Jadeja, before the left-hander changed his mind. By that point, the debutant had gone too far down the crease and was run out by a direct hit from Mark Wood.

Indian captain Rohit Sharma was not pleased at the dismissal, and could be seen angrily throwing his cap to the ground in the dressing room as it happened. Many fans and experts alike attributed the nervous confusion of the wicket to the fact that Jadeja was just one run away from a century, and perhaps misjudged his call.
