India captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and chose to bat, and the home side put on a show. After Rohit and Shubman Gill put on 71 for the first wicket, Virat Kohli took centre-stage, scoring his 50th ODI century, the most by anyone in the sport. Shreyas Iyer also smashed his second consecutive century, helping India post 397/4.

After the innings, Kohli spoke about his milestone on Star Sports.

Speaking to Anjum Chopra during the mid-innings break, Kohli reacted to his magnificent achievement. He said,

As I said, for me the most important thing is to make my team win. I've been given a role this tournament and I'm trying to dig deep. That's the key to consistency - play according to the situation and play for the team.

It's the stuff of dreams. Sachin paaji was there in the stands. It's very difficult for me to express it. My life partner [Anushka Sharma], my hero - he's sitting there. And all these fans at the Wankhede.

Coincidentally, today's date, on which Kohli broke yet another record of Sachin Tendulkar's, is the same as the one on which the Little Master played his final match for India, in 2013 at the very same Wankhede Stadium.
