Here's a look at India's past record at the ICC ODI men's tournament, and an assessment of their chances for this year.

India Cricket World Cup record: How many times has India won the ODI WC?

In 2011, India's cricket team brought the coveted ODI ICC trophy home after 28 years waiting — the previous time India had hoisted the prize was in 1983 when they won a maiden World Cup title.

It was another historic win for a country that worships the sport.

Fast forward to 2023, Indian fans are eagerly waiting for their team to end their latest ICC trophy drought, as the ODI World Cup commences on October 5 in their home country.

Along with the West Indies, India is the only other country to win the ODI World Cup twice.

Over the years, they have reached four semi-finals, participated in three finals, and won two of them.

Since the 2011 World Cup, India has been close to the World Cup trophy twice, but lost both the 2015 and 2019 semi-finals.

The 2019 ODI World Cup semi-final match between India and New Zealand was unforgettable as it was MS Dhoni’s last World Cup.

A dream run by Rohit Sharma — who hit a record six centuries in the tournament — and India's unbeaten winning streak through to the last four seemed to have set them up for glory, but they ended up on the losing side.

Now, under Rohit's captaincy, they look ready to end the wait.

India Cricket World Cup 2023 predictions, best bets and odds

Fans' opinions about India's chances at the 2023 World Cup are divided. While some believe the hosts will be able to create the same magic as the team did in 2011, others think that India’s inconsistency with players, the complicated decision-making and lack of clarity of roles might just lead to another playoff exit for the country.

The sportsbooks, however, mark them as the tournament favourites and they are rated as 3.40 chances to win the trophy by Dafabet, ahead of England (4.25), Australia (5.50) and Pakistan (8.00)
