The hosts chose to bat first, and tons from Rohit Sharma (131) and Ravindra Jadeja (112) ensured they recovered from 33/3 to post 445. In reply, England were cruising at 222/2 before collapsing to 319 all out and handing India a 126-run lead.
Thereafter, Yashasvi Jaiswal took over with a swashbuckling 214*, helping India declare and set England 557 to win. The visitors were then promptly bowled out for 122, giving India their biggest-ever Test win.
'India generally get better': Michael Vaughan doesn't see England bouncing back after heavy Rajkot defeat
Speaking after the match, former England captain Michael Vaughan was asked about England's chances of recovering in the series. He said,
Playing in India, I've never known an Indian team get worse as the series goes on, they generally get better. I think they've worked out the pitches. The first one spun a bit and helped England's spinners but the last two have been good Test match wickets. India's quality starts to come through on these flatter wickets.
Vaughan went on to lament the fact that England did not have many options to choose from in terms of replacing players for the remaining matches. He also claimed England missed a trick in their chase by not dragging it out for longer thereby potentially tiring out Jasprit Bumrah for the next match.
England captain Ben Stokes was upbeat despite the loss, claiming that it was a blip but that his side had every chance of coming back to win the series 3-2. The fourth Test is set to get underway in Ranchi on February 23.
