How many overs are there in the Ashes? image

The Ashes series is undoubtedly the most iconic test series there is. It is a series of five Test matches where two giants of the sport, England and Australia, go toe-to-toe to claim supremacy over the other. The rivalry has been brewing for over a century.

The term “Ashes” originated when the Australian team defeated England in their backyard at the Oval Stadium in 1882. The satire of an obituary published in the newspapers read as “The body had died, and the ashes will be taken to Australia”. In reply, the then England Captain Ivo Bligh promised that he and his men would “regain those ashes” from Australia. “Ashes” is used for the England-Australia Test series ever since.

“The Ashes” are awarded to the team that wins the series. In case of a draw, the team holding the Ashes retains the trophy. There have been 72 Ashes series to date - Australia leads the tally by 34-32. Six series have ended in a draw. England is the current holder of “The Ashes Urn” after they won the series in 2015. The 2019 series ended in a draw, meaning England retained the urn.

The 2023 Ashes series commences on Friday, June 16, with the first test played at the Edgbaston in Birmingham.

The rules of an Ashes Test Match are pretty much similar those of any other Test match.
