Afghanistan have been officially eliminated from the 2023 Cricket World Cup after they lost to South Africa by 5 wickets in their final league stage game in Ahmedabad on Friday.

In order to stand a chance to qualify for the semis, the Afghans needed to beat South Africa by 438 runs. Batting first, they managed to put up a total of 244 runs in 50 overs. At that moment, they were mathematically out of the tournament. The Proteas chased down the total in 47.3 overs for the loss of five wickets,

Afghanistan defeated England, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Netherlands in this edition. This was their most succesful campaign in World Cup history as they had managed to win just one game in the 2015 and 2019 editions combined.
