Ball (20-0-1) has gone on quite a three-fight run. He beat Isaac Dogboe and fought Rey Vargas to a draw in a WBC featherweight title fight. Instead of a unification fight, he fought Raymond Ford during the 5 v. 5 Queensberry vs. Matchroom event, winning a close contest to take home WBA gold.
The Liverpool-born star heads home for the first time since 2020, this time with gold around his waist.
A National Golden Gloves and two-time U.S. National bantamweight champion, Rios (34-4) competes in his third world title fight. He lost against Vargas in 2017 for the WBC super bantamweight title and Murodjon Akhmadaliev in 2022 for the IBF belt. His last fight was in April, two years after facing Akhmadaliev.
Competing sporadically over the years, Rios had the idea of retiring for good. However, he couldn’t leave the sport behind and believes his experience will be key in this fight.
“The time off, I’ll be honest with you guys, was very crucial for me,” Rios said on Big Fight Breakdown on ProBox TV via Boxing Scene. “I’m a firm believer that nothing helps you get over a loss [more] than time… I have two kids now, and I wanted to be able to tell my kids, ‘Hey, you can do anything you want if you put your mind to it.’ And I can’t tell them that without going out and trying it for myself.
“I didn’t come back for a payday, I came back to win a world title, and now that opportunity’s here.”
