Ready to take over another division, Teofimo Lopez steps up and challenges Josh Taylor for the WBO and Ring Magazine super lightweight titles on June 10.
The fight is inside Madison Square Garden’s Hulu Theater and will air live on ESPN.
Taylor won the World Boxing Super Super Series super lightweight tournament in 2018. "The Tartan Tornado" beat Ryan Martin in the quarter-finals; Ivan Baranchyk in the semi-finals for the IBF super lightweight title; and Regis Prograis in the finals for the WBA and Ring belts. The Scotsman was on top of the world when he beat Jose Ramirez for the WBC and WBO belts to become the undisputed champion.
Despite relinquishing three of his titles, Taylor is one of the best fighters in the world. Fully confident, he will not be backing down from Lopez’s unique offense.
"It could be a highly skilled boxing match and go the 12 rounds, but I think with his style and his personality, I'm not going to have to go looking for him and, the way I box, you don't have to go looking for me if you want to have a fight,” Taylor said via BBC.

“It's got the potential to be an absolute firecracker - fireworks from the very get-go. One of us will get caught, and I don't see us seeing the final bell if that's the case - I can see him going on his back. He has a lot of flaws and makes a lot of mistakes. I can see me knocking him out early.”
Lopez beat Richard Commey in 2019 for the IBF lightweight title and Vasiliy Lomachenko in 2020 for the WBA, WBO, and Ring belts. After losing to George Kambosos, Lopez moved to a new division and defeated Sandor Martin despite being less than convincing. Looking to return to vintage form, “The Takeover” will do whatever it takes to hand Taylor his first loss.
Outside of Taylor vs. Lopez, several young prospects are looking to stand out. Here is a look into the Taylor vs. Lopez card.
