Top Rank opens its 2024 boxing season in Canada with a light heavyweight title fight with more than gold on the line. Artur Beterbiev defends the IBF, WBC, and WBO light heavyweight belts against Callum Smith on January 13.
A two-time European Championships gold medalist, Beterbiev won the IBF light heavyweight title against Enrico Kolling in 2017. He beat Oleksandr Gvozdyk to win the WBC title and Joe Smith Jr. in 2022 for the WBO belt. In his last fight in January 2023, Beterbiev took down Anthony Yarde to retain the titles. He has a 100% knockout-to-win ratio.
A silver medalist in the 2010 Commonwealth Games, Smith turned pro in 2012. The former super middleweight contender won the WBA title in 2018 but lost the belt against Canelo Alvarez in 2020. Since then, "Mundo" has won two straight at the light heavyweight level, beating Mathieu Bauderlique in August 2022 via knockout.
The winner of the fight will likely face WBA light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol in an undisputed title fight. Though considered the underdog, nobody is counting Smith out. That includes Matchroom’s Eddie Hearn.

“Every time I think about this fight, you know, as Callum does, just catch/counter, I can see him knocking out Artur Beterbiev out cold in Quebec,” Hearn told Matchroom via Bad Left Hook. “It’s a tough task but I really believe he’s going to do it and people give him a good shot in that fight, and I do… (Injuries are mounting on Beterbiev) and age, you know, had to pull out the first fight. Saw him against Yarde, obviously a very good fighter, but just started to show a few signs I think he can be hurt but a big danger and Callum has to be spot on. But I believe he’ll do it.”
