It has been years since the two last fought one another. Many have questioned if a third fight was worth it. Once Canelo Alvarez and Gennadiy “GGG” Golovkin faced off for their first press conference since September 2018 for the trilogy fight, however, the interest level increased exponentially.

Canelo and Golovkin will face off on September 17 from inside the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The previous fights between the two were contested in that arena. It is the perfect setting for Canelo and Golovkin to duke it out, potentially for the last time. On the line will be Canelo’s WBA (Super), WBC, IBF, WBO, and The Ring super-middleweight titles.

"I don't want this fight to go the distance. I think this fight is going to be the best. The third fight between us will be the best,” Canelo stated during the New York press conference.

These two know exactly what they are doing.

There is a lot of tension coming into this fight. With stars of this magnitude, it may have been expected. With the series 1-0-1 in favor of Canelo, why is he showcasing more emotion than Golovkin? What is really on the line in this fight between two all-time greats?

Canelo vs. GGG 3: Unfinished Business

When Canelo and Golovkin fought in 2017, the two put on a clinic. The fight ended in a draw, although many didn't see it that way. Various pundits had Golovkin winning. The next bout was initially postponed due to Canelo getting suspended by the Nevada Athletic Commission after failing a drug test for clenbuterol. Canelo blamed it on the meat he ate in Mexico.

In the second fight, fans and pundits had Golovkin winning again. Canelo would win, however, via majority decision. Golovkin has called Canelo a drug cheat but still wants to fight him to take care of “unfinished business.”

“If he did something wrong once, it cannot be completely forgotten," Golovkin stated, via ESPN. "You don't come out clean after you did something wrong. It'll stay with you."

Looking back at past trilogies, like Tyson Fury vs. Deontay Wilder, Manny Pacquiao vs. Erik Morales, and Muhammad Ali vs. Joe Frazier, they always ended with some dramatic flair. The series between Canelo and Golovkin might need that for both men to move forward. Canelo feels like he needs to take Golovkin down. It is a much more aggressive side of Canelo that we have seen compared to what we are used to.

Canelo vs. GGG 3: All About Respect

It is clear as day that Canelo does not care much for Golovkin. We have seen that during the press conferences. Golovkin has become an itch that Canelo cannot get rid of. While these two are certainly headed to the Hall of Fame one day, respect is in question. Will Canelo respect him when all is said and done?

During the New York press conference, Canelo stated that he likes to respect his opponents when they respect him. When Golovkin talks about his past, Canelo has not been a fan. He wants to end all the talk and move on.

“It’s personal for me… He’s two different people. He pretends to be a nice guy but he’s not, he’s an a------,” Canelo stated. “That’s what he is. He pretends to be a nice guy and, ‘Oh, yes, I’m just looking for the fight, I’m happy.’ And then in other places, he talks a lot of s---. It is what it is. Just be a man and say what you say.”

Since the second fight, Canelo has gone 8-1, becoming undisputed super-middleweight champion in just eleven months. His last fight was a loss against Dmitry Bivol for the WBA (Super) light-heavyweight title.

Perhaps that loss has agitated him to act the way he has been?

Matchroom Boxing's Eddie Hearn told The Sporting News that Alvarez is angry about the loss, and believes Canelo will use it against Golovkin. He just needs to remain somewhat calm and not overexert himself. A focused Canelo can be a bad sign for any opponent.

Golovkin has won four in a row since the Canelo fights, recently beating Ryota Murata for the IBF and IBO middleweight titles. Injuries and delays in action have affected his career, but Canelo has always been on his mind.

As far as seeing this as a true rivalry, Golovkin told The Sporting News he only sees it as that from an athletic standpoint. He would be interested in meeting without media or promoters to hash things out.

Would Canelo be interested in that?

Canelo and Golovkin may be fighting for super-middleweight gold, but that may be the least important aspect of this fight. After years of fans, the media, promoters, and the fighters calling for the trilogy to happen, it will finally be settled in the ring.

Will they get what they hoped for from the fight, or will the issues between the two never be resolved?
