The long-standing rivalry between Utah and Utah State — also known as the "Battle of the Brothers" — is set for another matchup this week.
The Utes are the strongest program in the Big 12 and are a safe bet for the conference championship, but are returning from an 8-5 record last season. Utah suffered an injury-riddled squad in 2023, losing key players like quarterback Cam Rising, tight end Brant Kuithe and receiver Mycah Pittman.
Rising is banged up again, with a finger injury expected to sideline him Saturday, but Utah isn't a one-man show. Last week, the Utes beat Baylor 23-12, with the defense holding the Bears to just 3.7 yards per play, and completing three sacks overall. Senior running back Micah Bernard had a great performance, notching 118 yards on 19 carries, and catching twice for five yards and a touchdown.
Utah State is expected to be a contender for the Mountain West this year despite a last-minute coaching change in July. The Aggies' offense has many options this season, especially with star receiver Jalen Royals, who racked up 1,080 yards and 15 TDs receiving last year.
Unfortunately, the Aggies' were shut out 48-0 by USC last week in an abysmal showing. While the Trojans might just be that good, Utah State surely didn't perform to its potential. But the Aggies will be fired up to face their in-state rivals.
