For just the fifth time, Notre Dame takes on Louisville on the gridiron. And this time, it's a ranked matchup.
While entering the season as a top contender, the Irish have a lot to prove if they want a bid into the 12-team CFP bracket. They were upset in Week 2 by Northern Illinois but bounced back with a dominating performance over in-state rival Purdue. Riley Leonard has yet to throw a touchdown, instead tossing two interceptions. He has, however, scored four TDs on the ground while backup quarterback Steve Angeli has thrown two himself.
But the Cardinals are their toughest competition yet. Louisville rolled to two wins to open the season against Austin Peay and Jacksonville State. Sixth year QB Tyler Shough's experience has proven useful as he has six interceptions through those games. But can he get past the Irish defense?
He'll need to if the Cardinals themselves want any shot at a playoff bid. The 2023 ACC runner-up will likely need to win the championship game to do so, but the ACC is wide open this year. Going into Notre Dame and defeating the Irish would be a helpful statement, and Louisville has the ability. After all, they won the matchup last season in Kentucky 33-20.
