Liberty will try to finish the season undefeated when it battles powerhouse Oregon in the VRBO Fiesta Bowl in Arizona on New Year's Day.
The 13-0 Flames are the first team from Conference USA to play in a the New Year's Six game. Liberty (No. 18 in AP poll and No. 20 in coaches' poll) finished No. 23 in the final College Football Playoff rankings.
First-year coach Jamey Chadwell was named C-USA Co-Coach of the Year, and quarterback Kaidon Salter was named the C-USA Most Valuable Player. In addition, linebacker Tyren Dupree was named the Defensive Player of the Year, and transfer running back Quinton Cooley was selected Newcomer of the Year.
The Flames enter bowl season averaging 302.9 yards per game having rushed for a school-record 3,938 yards and 39 touchdowns in 2023. Liberty also ranks No. 2 in sacks allowed (0.69 per game), No. 2 in first down offense (333), No. 2 in time of possession (33:43), and No. 3 in total offense (514.9 yards per game).
Defensively, Liberty leads the nation with 21 interceptions while ranking No. 2 in the country in turnovers gained (25).
Eighth-ranked Oregon (11-2) will have several key players available for this game, including Heisman finalist quarterback Bo Nix. The Auburn transfer has thrown for 4,145 yards this season with 40 touchdown passes and three interceptions. Nix won the William V. Campbell Trophy as the nation's top scholar athlete.
Nix has solid protection from his offensive line. Center Jackson Powers-Johnson won the Rimington Trophy as the nation's top center and was named an Associated Press All-American. He became the 11th player in program history to secure consensus first-team All-America status.
Wide receiver Troy Franklin was named an Associated Press All-America Second Team and is tied for second in the nation with 14 touchdown receptions. He also ranks No. 5 nationally with 1,383 yards receiving and is tied for sixth with 106.4 receiving yards per game. Franklin broke the Oregon single-season records for receptions (81), receiving yards, receiving touchdowns and 100-yard receiving games (8).
This will be the first ever meeting between Oregon and Liberty.
