The 49ers renew their postseason rivalry with the Packers in the divisional round of the NFC playoffs on Saturday, Jan 20. It's the 10th postseason meeting between the Packers and 49ers, the most between any two teams in NFL playoff history.
San Francisco holds a 5-4 edge in the playoff series while Green Bay holds the advantage in points, 218-204.
The 49ers this year earned a first-round bye as the top seed in the NFC. They got a boost when running back Christian McCaffrey returned to practice Tuesday after recovering from a right calf injury he suffered in a Week 17 win against the Commanders.
Quarterback Brock Purdy led the NFL in QBR (72.7) and set a franchise record for passing yards in a season (4,280) and became the first 49ers quarterback to throw at least 30 touchdown passes (31) since 2001. Purdy was held out of the final regular-season game to get ready for the playoffs, but he is not concerned about any rust from the layoff.
The 49ers finished second in total offense (398.4 yards per game), third in rushing yards (140.5 ypg) and third in scoring (28.9 points per game).
Defensively, San Francisco allowed just 17.5 yards per game, which ranked third in the NFL.
Packers coach Matt LaFleur and 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan worked together in Atlanta (2015-16), Washington (2010-13) and Houston (2008-09).
The seventh-seeded Packers stunned the Cowboys, 48-31, in the wild-card round Sunday.
Aaron Jones ran for three touchdowns, and Jordan Love threw for three more scores in his postseason debut. Packers safety Darnell Savage returned an interception 64 yards for a touchdown.
Green Bay was one of the hottest teams in the NFL over the second half of the season, finishing third in total yards (384.3 ypg) and ninth in scoring (25.5 ppg) in the final eight games.
Love had the second-highest passer rating (112.7) in the league over that same stretch, completing 196 of 279 passes (70.3 percent) for 2,150 yards, 18 touchdowns and just one interception.
