Top-seeded Purdue and No. 5-seeded Gonzaga will meet in one of the most intriguing Sweet 16 matchups of the 2024 NCAA Tournament on Friday in Detroit.

The key for the Bulldogs will be containing Boilermakers center Zach Edey, the leading candidate for national player of the year. The teams already met this season in the Maui Invitational, with Purdue winning, 73-63. Edey scored 25 points and had 14 rebounds with 3 blocked shots.

Purdue advanced with a convincing, 106-67 victory over eighth-seeded Utah State in the second round of the tournament Sunday. Edey had 23 points and 14 rebounds and became the first player since Lew Alcindor (1968) to have at least 50 points, 35 rebounds and shoot 65 percent from the field in the first two NCAA Tournament games. He has 53 points and 35 rebounds while shooting 19-of-28 (.679) from the field in the first two games.

Trey Kaufman-Renn scored 18 points and tied a career-high with eight rebounds. In the two NCAA Tournament games this year, Kaufman-Renn has 29 points, 15 rebounds and 5 assists in 46 minutes.

Braden Smith became the fifth player in NCAA history with 425 points, 250 assists and 200 rebounds in a season, now with 430 points, 256 assists and 200 rebounds, joining UCLA's Lonzo Ball, BYU's Kyle Collinsworth, California's Jason Kidd and Michigan State's Magic Johnson.

Gonzaga was equally impressive, knocking off fourth-seeded Kansas, 89-68, in their second-round game to advance to its ninth straight Sweet 16.

Anton Watson led Gonzaga with 21 points, while center Graham Ike and forward Ben Gregg scored 15 points apiece. Ike was named honorable mention All-American by the Associated Press this season.

The Bulldogs won both their games in Salt Lake City by 21 points and pose a huge threat to Purdue's potential title run. Gonzaga has advanced to two national championship games, losing to North Carolina in 2017 and falling to Baylor in 2021.
