Dolphins' Tua Tagovailoa looks quicker this year, per reporter image

With the ink still drying on a lucrative contract extension, Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has millions of reasons to have a metaphorical spring in his step. According to one Dolphins reporter, Tagovailoa also looks to have a literal spring in his step at the start of this year’s training camp.

According to Miami Dolphins reporter Travis Wingfield, Tagovailoa looks “quicker/springier” so far in camp. That should be an encouraging sign for Dolphins fans. One of the criticisms of Tagovailoa to this point in his career has been a seeming unwillingness to try and create when the play breaks down.

A lot of that hesitance may come from the severe hip injury Tagovailoa suffered during his final season at Alabama, and the subsequent health issues he’s faced during his time in the league. Last season, in response to concussion issues, Tagovailoa reportedly gained several pounds and also took martial arts training in the offseason to learn how to “fall correctly”.

Now, it seems like Tagovailoa has shed that extra weight he put on to try and cushion blows, perhaps indicating he’s now comfortable in his natural ability to avoid heavy hits. With a trimmed down, sleeker version, could we see more scrambling and creating opportunities outside the structure of the play from Tagovailoa in 2024? Early indications seem to suggest it, and that would be a welcomed sight for Dolphins fans who have wanted to see that facet of Tagovailoa’s game for years.
