The New York City Marathon is back in full force for the first time since 2019.
After the race was canceled in 2020 and scaled back to 33,000 runners in 2021, the nation's largest marathon will host a full field of 50,000 runners on Sunday. Additionally, most of the COVID-19 measures from last year's race — including the use of multiple starting areas — are gone.
Temperatures are expected to be warmer than normal, adding a challenge to a diverse field of competitors.
After the canceled marathon in 2020, Albert Korir and Peres Jepchirchir finished ahead of the pack in the 2021 marathon. Korir led all men with a time of 2 hours, 8 minutes, 22 seconds, while Jepchirchir led all women at 2:22:39.
