Shubhankar Sharma finished in tied-eighth position at the Royal Liverpool Golf Club in Merseyside, England on Sunday to record the best finish by an Indian at The Open Championships.
Playing his third Open Championships, the Indian recorded a total of 5-under 279 and was the only player to register a bogey-free round on a wet and soggy final day.

The Open Championships, also known as the British Open, is the oldest and grandest golf tournament in the world. It is one of the four 'majors' in a year on the PGA Tour.
Sharma, who turned 27 on Friday, carded 68-71-70-70 to finish five under par in the rain-drenched tournament.

Sharma's T-8 finish was the second-best by an Indian at a major. Anirban Lahiri had finished T-5 at the 2015 PGA Championships while Jeev Milkha Singh's best finish at a major was T-9 at the 2008 PGA Championships.
“I am just happy,” Sharma said. “I don’t like to talk much about my own game, but I am very proud of what I managed to accomplish today... This was probably the best round of golf that I have ever played in my life.”
Having finished in the top 10, the Indian has earned an invitation to compete at the Open Championships at Troon next year.
