The quarterfinal draw is nearly complete, with only the outcome of India's Vidit Gujrathi and Russian Ian Nepomniachtchi 5th round face-off remaining to be determined via a tiebreaker on Monday.

What were the results of the fifth round in the Chess World Cup?

The headline results came from star players D Gukesh and Magnus Carlsen. First seed Carlsen beat Ukrainian 49th seed Vasyl Ivanchuk 2-0 to enter the quarterfinals while Gukesh drew the second game against China's Wang Hao after winning the first, to go through 1.5-0.5.

Gukesh, India's top-ranked player, will now face Carlsen, a former world champion, in the quarterfinals. The head-to-head standard record between the two stands at 3-1 in Carlsen's favour, with two draws. The 17 year-old Indian made headlines earlier this yeat when he beat Carlsen in a blitz match in June.

What did Magnus Carlsen say about the match against Gukesh?

After sealing his place in the last eight, Carlsen told Fide website: "I’m obviously very happy to be in the quarters. It didn’t look like that’s necessarily a few days ago and I’m very happy to get a rest day. We’re in the quarters so you sort of expect to be playing the very tough guys and the way he’s playing now, Gukesh is one of them."

How did Indians perform in the Chess World Cup?

The other Indian participants in the fifth round were Arjun Erigaisi and R Praggnanandhaa, who beat Nils Grandelius and Ferenc Berkes respectively. They will face each other in the quarterfinals.
