Rohan Bopanna bids Davis Cup farewell; India beat Morocco 4-1 image

Rohan Boppana ended his Davis Cup career on a high as he guided India to a 4-1 victory over Morocco in the World Group II tie at the Vijayant Khand Mini Stadium in Gomti Nagar on Sunday.

In the last Davis Cup match of his career, Bopanna paired up with Yuki Bhambri to decimate the Moroccan pair of Elliot Benchetrit-Younes Lalami Laaroussi 6-2, 6-1.

Later in the day, Sumit Nagal got the better of Yassine Dlimi 6-3, 6-3 while Digvijay Pratap Singh won the dead fifth rubber 6-1, 5-7 (10-6)  against Walid Ahouda.

The day, however, belonged to Bopanna, who dominated with his powerful forehands. He and Bhambri made short work of their opponents, ranked much lower on the ATP charts, to give India a 2-1 lead in the tie. India and Morocco were tied 1-1 on Saturday, the opening day of the match.

After Bopanna drew curtains on his illustrious 21-year long Davis Cup career, he acknowledged the crowd in Lucknow and walked around the court wrapped in an Indian flag.

What next for the Indian team in Davis Cup?

India are one step closer to returning to World Group I with this win. The team will next play play World Group I play-off in 2024, for a shot at advancing in the competition.
