India clinched gold medal at the 45th edition of the FIDE Chess Olympiad on Sunday, marking a historic achievement.
The team of D. Gukesh, R. Praggnanandhaa, Arjun Erigaisi, Vidit Gujrathi, and Harikrishna Pentala won against Slovenia in the 11th round of the event to secure the decisive gold.
The 45th edition of the FIDE Chess Olympiad is being held in Budapest, Hungary. And this was India's first-ever gold at the Olympiad event (online events not included).

What happened at the 45th FIDE Chess Olympiad 2024?
India got the better of Slovenia in Budapest to win the historic gold. Gukesh and Erigaisi won their ties against Vladimir Fedoseev and Jan Subelj respectively, to solidify India's position in the 11th round of the tournament.
Youngster Praggnanandhaa R also beat his opponent in Demchenko Anton to give India the 3-0 head-to-head lead against Slovenia.
The gold in Budapest is only the second time that the Indian contingent finished at the top of the podium at the FIDE chess olympiad. The Indian contingent won its first-ever gold in the virtual event in 2020 (online event).

With the gold in Budapest, India is now the 12th most successful country at the FIDE Chess Olympiads, in terms of gold medals won. The Indian chess players previously clinched bronze on two occasions at FIDE olympiad event.
