Lando Norris suffered a setback in his quest to close down the 62-point gap with Drivers' Championship leader Max Verstappen. The McLaren driver was knocked out in Q1 and will start the race in 17th position.
Verstappen finished sixth while his Red Bull teammate and defending champion Sergio Perez was placed fourth.
Kick Sauber's Zhou Guanyu will start the race in last place as the team was penalised for power unit changes between practice sessions.
