Falcons linebacker Sean Weatherspoon is done for the season after suffering an Achilles' tear on Tuesday.
Weatherspoon was hurt during a training run with team medical personnel. He has been working to rehab a knee injury he suffered in December.
“During Sean’s run today with our medical staff, he suffered an injury,” coach Mike Smith said in a statement.
Weatherspoon, a fifth-year pro, will undergo a procedure in the near future, Smith said.
Weatherspoon, 26, was limited to seven games last season because of the knee injury and an earlier foot injury. He was the team's most experienced returning linebacker.
Atlanta was 27th in the NFL in points allowed last season. It used six of its eight draft picks this year on defensive players, including linebackers Prince Shembo, Yawin Smallwood and Tyler Starr.
