The 2014 Redskins are set to make another starting quarterback change — back to their original starter.

According to Dianna Marie Russini of NBC4 in Washington, Robert Griffin III will return to action and start in Minnesota in Week 9. ESPN's Chris Mortensen confirmed the report two hours later.

A couple hours earlier, despite Griffin practicing in full and shaking off any effects of his ankle surgery, head coach Jay Gruden said the QB was just waiting for medical clearance. On Tuesday, Gruden noted Griffin was "very, very close to returning."

Wednesday night, Gruden sent a text message to the Associated Press saying he told the team coaches were going to "work Robert in with the first team but be ready for whoever" the quarterback is, either Griffin or Colt McCoy.

Griffin last played in the Week 2 win over Jacksonville, when he got hurt and Kirk Cousins was the first fill-in. Cousins started five games before being benched for Colt McCoy midway through Week 7. McCoy started in Week 9 and led Washington to win over Dallas. The Redskins are 3-5 through eight games.

McCoy, turns out, was just buying a little more time for RG3. Griffin steps into a tough matchup right away against the fourth-ranked Vikings pass defense and his mobility will be tested, too — Minnesota is tied for second in the NFL with 25 sacks.
