Josh Brent could return to the NFL with the Dallas Cowboys, once he's released from jail for a drunk-driving accident that killed his friend and teammate.

At a team-sponsored charity golf tournament on Tuesday, Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said the team would consider bringing back Brent, who was convicted of intoxicated manslaughter and sentenced in January to 180 days in jail and 10 years probation for the December 2012 crash that left linebacker Jerry Brown dead.

"I certainly wouldn't rule it out," Jones told reporters, according to several outlets, including ESPN.com.

Brent, 26, is scheduled to be released before the start of the Cowboys' training camp on July 23 in Oxnard, Calif. He retired from football last July before training camp began and before his trial. The Cowboys still hold his rights, though. Brent would have to be reinstated from the reserve-retired list by the NFL. He might still face discipline by the league under the personal-conduct policy.

The Cowboys and Brent's agent, Peter Schaffer, have stayed in touch with NFL officials, but no decision has been made about the terms of a comeback.
