St. John’s is parting with power forward recruit Keith Thomas after a university review of his academic record indicated he was not eligible for NCAA competition.

The school began looking into Thomas’ records after The Journal News reported two of Westchester (N.Y.) Community College’s players had their scholarships pulled at Florida A&M because of doctored transcripts.

As a result of these issues, WCC dismissed an assistant basketball coach, Richard Fields, and an investigation was launched by the New York State Office of the Inspector General.

“Academic integrity is treated very seriously at St. John’s University and we are committed to maintaining high academic standards for all of our student-athletes,” athletic director Chris Monasch said in a statement released byt the university. “Our athletic compliance office recently became aware of information that triggered an additional review of Thomas’ academic credentials at Westchester Community College. Our assessment and decision are in accordance with university and NCAA policies.”

Thomas is a 6-8 product of Mount Vernon, N.Y., and averaged 15.3 points and 15.7 rebounds for WCC. He had an opportunity to fill an important role in the St. John’s frontcourt.
